  • FLEXnet Publisher - Help companies maximize their profitability by optimizing the way they price, package and protect their products.
  • Many times the failures of IT are from unseen problems, or problems that you don’t find until it’s too late. Application packaging can be a challenge for any organization, and the cause of some of those fires. An investment in proper packaging and testing tools will help solve some of those problems. FEAR: Desktop instability can cause many issues- one organization thought they didn’t have any packaging problems, their deployments were working fine. On their next deployment, they had several problems, including 5 users wit blue screen of death, a problem for any organization, but one of those users with the blue screen was the CFO. Suddenly, there was an initiative to bring in a professional packaging option in AdminStudio. PRESSURE: Maybe your organization is overworked and understaffed, sound familiar? If you’re looking for ways to automate your packaging and testing, there are tools on the market to save you time and money. CHANGE: At Summit, you’ll learn a lot about the new application streaming capabilities in Citrix Presentation Server. Preparing applications for application streaming is another opportunity to look at your testing process and tools and look for time savers. CHALLENGE: Also, everyone is preparing for Windows Vista, especially with SP1 coming just around the corner. Preparing for an OS migration means preparing applications, which can be a time-consuming task. Not everyone will adopt a new OS right away, so complex environments require structured packaging processes to alleviate OS compatibility issues.
  • Everyone needs to create, customize and test MSI packages. In the current process associated with this, there are haphazard ways of getting packages out the door & deploying. With AdminStudio, we build structure that allows you to understand a process that can be duplicated from sys admin to sys admin without disconnect – producing the same quality of package regardless of who is touching it. AdminStudio is really the most widely used software packaging solution available on the market. In basic terms, AdminStudio is a tool to help IT staff quickly prepare software packages for error-free deployment to Windows operating systems. One of the key words in this first bullet is “test” MSI packages – so many times, IT staff will use a homegrown method to roll up their packages, then find embarrassing and time consuming errors that make their applications fail. AdminStudio prepares reliable software packages – and it is a fast option. It supports the direction of the industry, which is moving toward standardizing enterprise packaging processes. Microsoft and Novell are strong AdminStudio advocates, recommending AdminStudio for deployments. Customers like AdminStudio too. For 3 years running (2005, 2006 and 2007), Redmond Magazine readers have given AdminStudio their Readers Choice award for best Installation, Setup, & Deployment Tools. This is especially remarkable considering AdminStudio launched in 2001, so the Enterprise IT administrators have really adopted this product quickly and see the value in it. Now owned by Macrovision, AdminStudio was originally created by InstallShield, makers of the InstallShield® tool for authoring high-quality Windows Installer and InstallScript installations. How many of you have used InstallShield? If you’re not familiar, InstallShield ensures that software is correctly installed, configured, updated, and eventually uninstalled on Windows® desktops. If you’ve ever loaded software on your machine, it’s likely you’ve seen the InstallShield wizard load that software for you. Over 80% of the worlds software producers rely on InstallShield as their packaging solution. It only makes sense that the world’s leading packaging solution also helps IT staff deploy sofware through AdminStudio. InstallShield as a company, including the AdminStudio and InstallShield products, was acquired by Macrovision in July 2004. The two product lines are very strong producers for Macrovision and continue to be well supported. AdminStudio as a product has been around since 2001 and has always been focused on enterprise IT administrators. It embeds the InstallShield product.
  • When we talk about AdminStudio – this is the role we play in creating application profiles as well as MSIs – using the same interface, the same process, not changing. Customers who are already using AdminStudio or have already created MSIs using AdminStudio have no new process to create Citrix profiles to create application streaming. It’s the same process, same tool, same way to get from point a to point b. Customers that haven’t used AdminStudio would understand how to get the package from an executable or script based install, industry standard, customization, testing, handoff to deployment, actual distribution. Talk about solution set – legacy package, solution set.
  • Your firm definitely has services opportunities – Macrovision is happy to work with you on developing services opportunities around packaging and virtualization. We’ve been talking with customers around Virtualization best practices, which includes packaging for virtualization, when to virtualize specific applications, what might not be best to virtualize, when it’s a best idea to stream an application vs. traditionally deploy. These new services are really something for VARs and SIs to adopt and Macrovision is seeing customers who are looking for these new kinds of services.
  • But without accurate software usage data to guide them, companies routinely purchase the wrong number of licenses. To ensure users have access to the software they need, they frequently buy more licenses or renew more support contracts than their organizations actually require based on perceived requirements, not factual need. In fact, a Forsythe study reported that as much as 20% of all installed desktop software is unused or shelfware. They might also be overpaying for license types that provide much more functionality than certain users require. Gartner estimates that 60% of applications are overlicensed. For example, a company may pay for an employee to have access to an SAP professional license which can run around $5100 when they really only need an employee-level license to do their jobs which is only $200. Without any insight into how that employee is using their software, how is the license manager to know to do anything differently? Astute enterprises are recognizing that what users are given access to does not necessarily reflect which applications are in use and should no longer be an ongoing expense. On the other hand, organizations might also purchase too few licenses in an attempt to cut costs. If the software is licensed like so many expensive engineering applications are, usage may be strictly enforced, but when those limits are reached, end users are denied access to the software they need to do their jobs which impacts their ability to meet their deadlines and the target time to market. If the software doesn’t enforce usage limits like SAP or Oracle, employees may inadvertently use more than they are contractually allowed. In the past, vendors seemed to resort to audits to address only the most serious cases of noncompliance, but now sentiments have taken a turn. Now that larger vendors have refined their software audit processes, they see an opportunity to systematically audit their entire customer base. The economics are on their side. It is a relatively small investment to assign resources to conduct audits; and, one that is more than paid back if the audit uncovers issues that force the customer back to the negotiating table. And given that Garter estimates that 30% of licensed software is out of compliance, it’s not a bad bet for the vendor. Through 2010, 40% of midsize and large businesses can expect an external software licensing audit, significantly raising the risk of costs associated with noncompliance. Clients should operate under the assumption that they will be approached for at least one vendor audit in the next two years and prepare in advance to minimize the negative consequences. On the bright side, some clients that were approached by vendors for audits, and could document license usage and tracking, were not audited because the vendor accepted the record keeping as accurate. Clients can expect at least one vendor audit in the next two years Source: Gartner Predicts Increase in Vendor Software Audits Establishing good asset management policies and procedures can help prevent an audit Source: Gartner 2007 Survey Shows Continued Software Audits, July 13, 2007
  • Some companies think they have these problems solved because they have a software asset management system and a set of reports that are produced, with data for each major tool and vendor.  The problem for many enterprises is that they have masses of data but a shortage of information.  Generally usage reports are isolated by server providing no overall view across company, are run once a month which provides no sense of trending, or they’re not tied to contract or cost information.  In order to convert this data into information that supports actual decisions, a business analyst using several Excel spreadsheets has to stitch reports together across time and across servers, before injecting cost and contract information.  Obviously, this is a very manual process and is either not done at all or only done for major business events.
  • Perhaps even pay as you go

  • Depending on the level of process maturity and type of software used, Gartner estimates that enterprises that leverage software usage data in their license management programs will save 5% to 25% in the first year. After the first full cycle of contract renegotiations, the savings will continue at 2% to 3% every year. (Source: Cost Cutting by Effectively Using Existing Software, February, 2008) Freescale Semiconductor told us that without the license management program enabled by Acresso’s technology, his company would be spending at least 35% more on software ($30 million) every year. METRO Group has not had to purchase additional SAP licenses in the past two years – despite expanding
  • Note this is application virtualization Challenge: Organizations need to prepare a large number of applications for virtualization and don’t have extra staff time or tons of budget to do this. Action: Take advantage of AdminStudio to quickly, easily prepare for virtualization by allowing a proven software tool to package applications for you. A vendor-neutral, agnostic solution, AdminStudio has already been identified as a trusted source for packaging by leading virtualization vendors like Citrix. Results: Save time, money, with tested apps that are less likely to fail -- improving enterprise productivity (aka then the IT team is less likely to be sought out when the organization does have conflicts)
  • In January 2007, Macrovision joined the Citrix® Alliance Partner program as a Solution Partner. Macrovision is also a Citrix® Ready™ partner. Macrovision and Citrix are working together to provide Enterprise and Platinum Edition CPS customers easier deployment and packaging of CPS application streaming profiles. The Macrovision-Citrix partnership has many advantages for cusotmers. AdminStudio is complete – it serves as a single tool for all packaging needs, making it easy to deliver both Citrix profiles and MSI packages to Presentation Server quickly and reliably AdminStudio solution reduces packaging time by eliminating many Citrix profiling steps– AdminStudio is from Macrovision, a trusted leader with years of experience in building products for software packaging & deployment. The CPS process is faster when you use the AdminStudio tool AdminStudio includes testing & validation tools, reducing the time to deployment and the risk of serious errors Saving time means saving money – using AdminStudio, Citrix customers can cut costs associated with preparing applications for streaming with Presentation Server Other application streaming solutions are not optimized to work with AdminStudio like CPS. Overall, AdminStudio helps you whether you are preparing packages for a traditional deployment or with the new application streaming technology – AdminStudio is the only solution to simultaneously create Citrix application profiles and reliable MSI packages.

  • 10. Challenge: Application Deployment
    • Application management costs today are a burden:
      • $8K for every desktop
      • $15K for each server*
    • Unsuccessful application deployments cause significant downtime and increase support costs
      • “ Even after 10 years of experience, most companies cannot automatically deploy software with a success rate of 90 percent or better.” *
    * Source: Gartner Whitepaper, June 2005, Desktop Management Best Practices Focus on Policy, Process and People
  • 11. What is Application Packaging?
    • The act of customizing, configuring, and testing
    • an application, upgrade, or patch before it is
    • delivered into the production environment.
IT Administrators say: “ Where all the work takes place”
  • 12. Why Do Organizations Invest in Application Packaging?
      • Fear : desktop instability – creating packages that fail or cause crashes
      • Pressure : QA is an afterthought (time factor)
      • Change : consuming new technologies like Citrix XenApp or VMware ThinApp
      • Challenge : complex environments that support multiple operating systems, plus encounter OS compatibility issues
  • 13. When Do Organizations Invest in Application Packaging?
    • Preparing for Application Virtualization (multiple options available – more to come too!)
