  3. 3. Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment Introduction
  4. 4. Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment Introduction This presentation has been prepared to identify sustainability requirements in the Middle East and in particular Dubai. The presentation considers climate change, global emission reduction targets and various environmental assessments methods for the built environment. The presentation focuses on environment Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) which is the preferred assessment method. Sustainable strategies and technologies to satisfy LEED requirements are identified.
  5. 5. Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment Climate Change
  6. 6. Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment Climate Change Climate change and global warming are unequivocally the biggest and most fundamental problems facing planet earth and mankind today. Global warming and climate change are expected to have a cataclysmic effect across the globe. The worst effects of climate change can be avoided if greenhouse gases incorporating carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere are stabilised instead of being allowed to increase.
  7. 7. Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment Targets
  8. 8. Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment Targets Kyoto Protocol Cut overall emissions of greenhouse gases by 5.2% below 1990 levels by 2008-2012 United A b E i U i d Arab Emirates (UAE) Signed up to the Kyoto Protocol and have ratified their commitment on the 26/01/05. However, the UAE is a member of the G77 and subsequently does not have any reduction red ction targets as the UAE is considered a developing co ntr de eloping country. Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai has a vision whereby construction projects should consider becoming environmentally friendly with no specific international target.
  9. 9. Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment The Decree All buildings in Dubai will have to be constructed as per environment-friendly "green b ld building" standards from January d d f 2008, His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President R k , and Prime Minister of the UAE, has instructed in his capacity as the Ruler of Dubai. 13. 13. Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment USGBC, EHS & Emirates GBC The United States Green Building Council currently control the LEED certification process for projects in Dubai. EHS h have jjust announced regulations for a LEED assessment t d l ti f t on all projects in JAFZ The Emirates Green Building Council is currently reviewing LEED credits and have adjusted the credits to suit the Middle East construction industry and climate conditions. Pilot version 1 has been released.
  14. 14. Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment LEED LEED is controlled by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) it is an assessment method for benchmarking buildings with respect to sustainability and environmental design. Projects are registered with the USGBC online and the LEED assessment process is undertaken in two stages, stages design and construction stage submittals. After submittals project registration credits/prerequisites are distributed to each team member online & LEED APs facilitate this process. Design team members are responsible for various credit template/submittal completions.

  19. 19. Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment Sustainable Sites S t i bl Sit Buildings effect ecosystems in a variety of g y y ways. Development of greenfield or previously undeveloped sites consumes land. land The sustainable sites section of a LEED assessment considers site selection, development density, alternative transportation, protecting habitat, storm t t ti t ti h bit t t water, heat island effect and light pollution.
  20. 20. Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment Water Effi i W t Efficiency Billions of gallons of fresh water are g withdrawn each day from rivers and streams, reservoirs to support buildings around the world. The reduction of potable world water is paramount and this section gives credits for water efficient landscaping, innovative waste water technologies and i ti t t t h l i d water re-use where possible.
  21. 21. Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment Energy and Atmosphere E d At h It is reported buildings account for almost p g 50% of CO2 emission which is mainly derived through energy usage in buildings. It is vitally important to reduce energy consumption from buildings to reduce CO2 emissions and help curtail climate change activities. Thi section of the LEED ti iti This ti f th assessment considers commissioning, refrigerant management, optimizing energy g g p g gy performance, renewable technologies measurement and verification.
  22. 22. Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment Materials d Resources M t i l and R Building material choices are important in g p sustainable design because of the extensive network of extraction, processing and transportation. Construction and transportation demolition waste constitutes about 40% of solid waste. This section of the LEED assessment considers recycling, material t id li t i l re-use, waste management, regionally extracted, processes and manufactured p materials.
  23. 23. Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment Indoor Environmentall Quality I d E i t Q lit People on average spend 90% of their time p g p indoors. The internal environmental quality is paramount for a successful project. This section of a LEED assessment considers increased ventilation rates, ETS, adhesives and sealants, thermal comfort, controllability of systems, i d t ll bilit f t indoor chemical h i l and pollutant source control.
  24. 24. Sustainability Addressing Our Changing Environment Innovative and D i P I ti d Design Process This section of the LEED assessment has been included to encourage design teams to go beyond the requirements of the credits and prerequisites by awarding points for exemplary performance performance.
