Imagine a better world with visual language, thinking and practice Imagine a better world with visual language, thinking and practice Presentation Transcript

  • Imagining a better world with visual language, thinking and practice Ole Qvist-Sørensen Bigger Picture Stine Arensbach Szlavik Bigger Picture
  • Is there anyone who has come up with a powerful vision of a possible future?
  •
  •
  • This is an invitation to us… (watch it on www.ted.com)
  • Example: 2 day Council retreat with I nternational U nion for C onservation of N ature - We visualised their conversations, helped them to communicate clearer and drafted a visual version of their strategy for the next 4 years. This is how Bigger Picture has taken on the ”invitation” – Since Jan 2007 we have directed our deliveries to wards organisations and companies who are here to make a difference.
  • With the use of visuals we can help others get the important dialogues going… The 50 participants from the IUCN retreat is now using visuals to communicate globally around their strategy – and m,ore importantly: engaging others in dialogues around what c
      • What
      • could be
      • our
      • contribution?
      • (the visual thinking community)
  • Example 1: Duarte is already doing it…
  • Example 2: Freerange is already doing it…

  • Imagine if every scientist and politician had a visual practitioner help communicate in a different way
  • In Bigger Picture we have since Jan 2007 made it a clear goal to work on the complex challenges in the world. We seek partners and projects who intend to make a difference. In summer 2008 we formulated this as our contribution:
  • We will do this by designing, hosting and communicating big picture dialogues
  • Imagine if….
      • Individual reflection (Part I)
      • Imagine if we (the visual community) are the “they” we have been waiting for…
      • … What would be your
      • contribution / vision for 2009?
      • Spend 3 minutes (in silence), and fill out the postcard “canvas”
      • Individual reflection (Part II)
      • Imagine if we built a visual language for our “organisation” around
      • world change / green / sustainability…
      • What would be the most important words to have an illustration/icon for?
      • Spend 3 minutes and fill out the postcard “bullets”
      • (and write your email if you want to stay updated)
      • At tables:
      • Share your postcards
      • (Max 1 minute each)
      • Gather postcards in the middle of the table
      • INVITATION
  • Focus: The political dimension of climate change (the negotiation of a protocol to replace Kyoto)
  • What is it?
    • The political dimension
    • Technological dimension
    • Scientific dimension
Where can people go, during the Summit, for the human dimension ? - To discover how we need to grow and what we need to learn as people to cope and thrive in uncertain times?
  • What is it? A “place” where people can come to learn about the things that they can do, and the changes that they need to make in themselves and their communities to affect and cope with climate change.
  • ” Apply” and join the Visual Faculty of the Survival Academy
  • Why For all the reasons above
  • Where
  • When
  • What What could you contribute with? - Formulate a contribution that you could give, which will support the ”human dimension” of climate change and can become part of the Visual Faculty.
  • There is a wiki for the Survival Academy, where you can follow the progress.
  • There is a blog for the Visual Faculty, where you can follow the progress of this effort.
  • Whats next
    • Connect to those who may need your skills and tools
    • Follow the Blog and post comments and ideas
    • Submit by email a suggestion to a session you wish host (starting now – or in Copenhagen in December 09) which is about building capacities
