  • 1. BigHeads  uses  open  innova/on  principles  to  harness  the  perspec/ves  and  thinking  of  a  curated  brain  trust  made  up  of  bright   minds,  crea/ve  thinkers  and  problem  solvers  from  DIVERSE  fields  and  interests  to  help  brands,  companies  and  organiza/ons   boost  their  crea/ve  output,  develop  innova/ve  products,  generate  unique  insights  and  solve  difficult  problems.   Since   2006,   we   have   been   applying   open   innova/on   principles   to   deliver   breakthrough   insights,   product   innova/ons   and   solu/ons   to   companies   including   American   Express,   Bacardi,   BMW,   Domino’s,   GE,   Ipsos,   Johnson   &   Johnson,   KraS   Foods,   Motorola,  P&G,  PepsiCo,  Sony,  The  Farley  Project,  US  Nutri/on,  Vonage,  Walt  Disney  Pictures,  Wyndham  Worldwide  and  a   host  of  innova/on/marke/ng/research  agencies  and  consultancies.     Our  approach  is  100%  elas/c  and  can  be  used  for  a  variety  of  innova/on  objec/ves,  including:     It’s  been  proven  /me-‐and-‐/me  again  that  BREAKTHROUGH  solu/ons  and  ideas  are  more  likely  to  happen  when  companies   enable  the  input  of  many  DIVERSE  PERSPECTIVES,  because  it  gives  them  access  to  unbiased  thinking  and  allows  them  to   unearth  (oSen  unexpected)  industry  adjacencies.  Yet,  when  the  /me  comes  to  innovate,  many  of  them  LIMIT  their  crea/ve   explora/on  by  relying  on  the  perspec/ves  and  processes  they’ve  become  comfortable  with.     In  order  to  give  companies  the  opportunity  to  experience  the  CREATIVE  BOOST  that  diverse  thinking  provides,  we  curated  a   BRAIN  TRUST  made  up  of  more  than  1,000  hand-‐picked  crea/ve  minds,  visionaries  and  problem-‐solvers  from  all  DIFFERENT   backgrounds.  They  are  ar/sts,  chefs,  educators,  fashion  designers,  nutri/onists,  inventors,  writers,  comedians,  entrepreneurs,   app  developers,  decorators,  bloggers,  sustainability  experts,  musicians,  engineers,  physicians,  taeoo  ar/sts,  CEOs,  poli/cians,   super  moms,  mixologists,  farmers,  deejays,  photographers,  matchmakers,  architects,  filmmakers,  etc.     Since  they  are  BIG  thinkers  with  BIG  ideas,  we  call  them  “BIGHEADS”…and  we  harness  their  diverse  perspec/ves  and  thinking   to  help  brands,  companies  and  organiza/ons  boost  their  crea/ve  output,  develop  innova/ve  products,  generate  unique   insights  and  find  solu/ons  to  difficult  problems.       COMPANY  SNAPSHOT   •  Product  development;  filling  product  pipelines   •  Leveraging  insights  to  create  product  concepts   •  Crea/ng  unique  digital  &  social  experiences   •  Finding  solu/ons  to  diverse  business  problems   •  Rethinking  loyalty  &  benefit  programs   •  Line  extension  explora/on   •  Reinvigora/ng  mature  or  dormant  franchises     •  Iden/fying  untapped  markets  &  opportuni/es   •  Building  crea/ve  cultures,  systems  &  spaces   •  Boos/ng  exis/ng  product  &  marke/ng  ideas   •  Product  naming  &  packaging  inspira/on   •  Iden/fying  resources  for  commercializa/on   •  Uncovering  unobvious  insights   •  Beta-‐tes/ng  new  products  &  ideas     COMPANY  BACKGROUND   OUR  POINT-‐OF-‐VIEW  &  METHODOLOGY   bigheadsnetwork.com   “Innova'on  never  comes  from  the  established  ins'tu'on.  It's  always  a  graduate  student  or  a  crazy  person  or  somebody  with  great  vision.”      -‐  Eric  Schmidt,  Execu've  Chairman  of  Google
  • 2. When   the   /me   comes   to   innovate,   many   companies   limit   their   crea/ve   explora/on   by   relying   solely   on   the   tradi/onal   resources   and   processes   they’ve   become   comfortable   with   and   they   end   up   missing   out   on   a   universe   of   crea/vity   and   opportunity.  Our  Brand  Opening  is  a  turnkey  OPEN  INNOVATION  process  where  we  host  an  online  crea/ve  session  with  the   DIVERSE  members  of  BigHeads  Network.  This  allows  us  to  harness  both  the  familiar  and  unfamiliar  perspec/ves  and  thinking   needed  to  create  truly  break-‐through  new  products,  solu/ons,  services  and  ideas.       Step   1   –   Deep   Dive:   The   BigHeads   leadership   team   meets   with   you   to   review   and   solidify   the   project   objec/ve,   key   considera/ons   and   final   deliverables.     As   appropriate,   addi/onal   informa/on   such   as   target   informa/on,   category   research,  compe//ve  analysis,  etc.,  may  also  be  reviewed.     Step   2   –   Stepping   Back   (Reframing   the   Problem):   Once   we   know   your   objec/ve/problem   we   step   back   and   view   it   through  a  broader  lens  to  develop  a  project  thema/c/topic  that  will  interest  our  diverse  BigHeads  and  allow  them  to  make   connec/ons  to  their  lives  and  experiences.    Simply  put,  we  convert  your  objec/ve  from  internal  speak…to  human  speak.     Step  3  –  Online  Session/QuesYon  Development:  We  then  create  a  compelling  online  session  that  includes  a  series  of   strategically  craSed  ques/ons  for  the  BigHeads  to  answer  that  are  designed  to  uncover  techniques  they  employ,  things   they  know,  tools  they  use  and  connec/ons  they  have,  all  in  rela/on  to  the  more  involving  topic/thema/c.  Following  this   line  of  ques/oning  provides  us  with  the  unique  s/muli  and  inspira/on  we  use  to  develop  breakthrough  solu/ons.     Step  4  –  The  BigHeads:  We  place  your  project  into  our  secure  online  plajorm  and  invite  the  BigHeads  to  contribute  their   unique  thoughts,  ideas  and  perspec/ves.       Step  5  –  ConnecYng-‐the-‐Dots:    Once  all  the  feedback  is  received  from  the  BigHeads,  our  internal  team  begins  making   connec/ons  (connec/ng-‐the-‐dots)  between  the  feedback  and  the  project  objec/ve  to  develop  our  final  recommenda/ons.     Step  6  –  The  “Open  Book”:  You  receive  project  report  that  we  call  the  Open  Book,  which  includes  an  overall  summary  of   par/cipants,  all  the  unedited  responses  from  the  BigHeads  and  a  catalog  of  content  that  meets  your  overall  objec/ve.     Step  7  –  Review  &  Ranking:  We  present  all  the  insights  and  concepts  during  an  interac/ve  half-‐day  work  session  with   members   of   your   team.   Addi/onally,   your   team   will   have   the   opportunity   to   rank   the   content   against   your   overall   objec/ves  and  criteria  so  you  are  armed  with  the  top  insights,  ideas  and  approaches.     Step  8  –  ExecuYve  Summary:  We  then  regroup  with  your  core  team  to  review  the  top-‐ranked  approaches  from  the  half-‐ day  session  and  use  your  feedback  to  develop  an  easily  diges/ble  execu/ve  summary  that  recaps  the  process  and  features   necessary  detail  around  the  final  concepts.     OUR  CORE  APPROACHES  &  PROCESSES   CROSS-‐POLLINATION  (Laser-‐Focused  ExploraYon)     BRAND  OPENING  (Comprehensive  ExploraYon)     You  might  not  immediately  see  how  a  paint-‐blending  tool  used  by  a  car  restora/on  specialist  could  lead  to  a  new  product  for  a   cosme/cs   company...or   how   analyzing   the   marching   behavior   of   ants   could   help   a   major   airline   develop   a   more   efficient   boarding   process...or   how   techniques   used   by   a   bounty   hunter   could   help   companies   find   the   best   employees...but   INNOVATION  oSen  results  from  this  type  of  industry  CROSS  POLLINATION.     With  this  in  mind,  we  designed  an  approach  that  accelerates  these  types  of  unexpected  connec/ons.  It's  a  turnkey  process   where   we   collaborate   with   unexpected   bright   minds   and   experts   (BigHeads)   from   OUTSIDE   industries   to   uncover   tools,   techniques  and  ideas  from  their  disciplines  that  we  can  use  as  inspira/on  to  generate  ideas  and  solu/ons  for  your  objec/ve.
  • 3. Step   2   –   Stepping   Back   (Reframing   the   Problem):     Since   this   approach   revolves   around   iden/fying   individuals   who   connect  with  your  objec/ve  in  unique  and  unexpected  ways,  we  must  step  back  and  view  the  overall  objec/ve  through  a   broader  lens.  This  allows  us  to  develop  a  project  thema/c/topic  that  reframes  the  problem  and  acts  as  the  lynchpin  when   iden/fying  the  most  promising  cross  pollinators     Step  3  –  BigHeads  ID:  We  then  cross-‐reference  the  broader  thema/c  with  our  network  of  1,000  bright  minds,  experts  and   problem-‐solvers  to  iden/fy  the  BigHeads  who  will  par/cipate  in  the  overall  explora/on.  For  example:     A  company  interested  in  finding  unique  and  effec've  ways  to  mone'ze  a  plaHorm  or  service  could  expect  to  learn  from   BigHeads  who  hail  from  disparate  industries  with  proven  commercial  models  –  subscrip'ons,  licensing,  membership,   franchising,  etc.       A  brand  focused  on  finding  new  and  unique  ways  to  LAUNCH  a  new  product  could  expect  to  learn  from  unexpected   BigHeads  who  “launch”  things  in  OUTSIDE  industries  such  as  musicians  who  launch  albums,  reality  TV  producers  who   launch  shows,  designers  who  launch  bou'que  hotels,  etc.       Step  4  –  Interviews:  Our  team  holds  comprehensive  interviews  (phone  and/or  in-‐person)  with  each  of  the  par/cipa/ng   BigHeads  to  gain  a  complete  understanding  of  the  approaches,  techniques,  tac/cs,  tools,  etc.  they  use  in  their  industry.         Step  5  –  Cross-‐PollinaYon:  Once  the  interviews  are  complete,  our  internal  team  begins  the  cross-‐pollina/on  process  by   making  connec/ons  (connec/ng-‐the-‐dots)  between  the  informa/on  we  received  during  the  interviews  and  your  overall   objec/ve  to  develop  our  final  ideas  and  recommenda/ons.     Step  6  –  The  Report:  You  receive  project  report,  which  includes  transcripts  of  our  interviews  with  the  BigHeads,  along  with   a   collec/on   of   ideas   and   breakthrough   innova/ons,   inspired   by   the   approaches,   techniques,   tac/cs,   tools,   etc.   the   par/cipa/ng   BigHeads   use   in   their   industry.   The   key   findings   from   the   report   are   presented   to   your   team   during   an   engaging  work  session.     Excursions  (OPTIONAL  STEP):  If  you’d  like  to  be  more  involved  in  the  process,  we  will  schedule  half-‐day  “visits”  and  give   members  of  your  team  the  unique  opportunity  to  “shadow”  the  par/cipa/ng  BigHeads  so  they  can  gain  a  “hands-‐on”   understanding  of  the  approaches,  techniques,  tac/cs,  tools,  etc.  they  use  in  their  industry.    Following  the  visits,  each   member   of   your   team   will   be   challenged   to   make   (force)   connec/ons   between   the   overall   objec/ve/goal   and   the   informa/on   collected   during   their   visits   to   create   new   ideas   and   breakthrough   innova/ons   inspired   by   their   unlikely   source.    We  will  include  each  team  member’s  ideas  and  recommenda/ons  in  the  final  report.   IDEA  BOOSTER  /  CROWD  COUNSELING  (ExisYng  Idea  ExploraYon)     Interested  in  gelng  even  more  crea/ve  input  around  the  top  ideas  from  your  latest  brainstorm  session…or  adding  some   unique  bells-‐and-‐whistles  to  the  concepts  silng  in  your  product  pipeline…or  iden/fying  unique  ways  to  commercialize  that   new  product  you’ve  been  exploring?  Our  Idea  Booster  is  a  unique  crowd  counseling  approach  designed  to  give  your  brand/ company  turnkey  access  to  a  carefully  curated  group  of  BigHeads  who  are  invited  into  our  secure  online  plajorm  where  they   provide  you  with  invaluable  insights,  crea/ve  input,  valida/on,  relevant  exper/se  and  unexpected  builds  that  you  can  use  to   give  the  ideas  you’re  developing  that  extra  BOOST.     Step   1   –   Post   It:   Post   your   working   idea   on   our   secure   online   plajorm   in   the   format   that   best   conveys   the   concept   (.PDF,  .JPG,  .GIF,  .MPG).     Step  2  –  The  BigHeads:  Based  on  your  idea  and  overall  objec/ve,  we  will  recommend  10-‐15  BigHeads  who  can  help  give   the  concept  a  “boost.”  Overall,  our  goal  is  to  curate  a  dynamic  group  of  individuals  who  have  a  “right  to  a  point-‐of-‐view”   due  to  their  unique  connec/ons  to  your  idea  and  goals.  For  example:     You  might  have  a  BIG  idea  that  could  use  some  unique  crea've  twists.  We  can  enlist  BigHeads  who  live-‐and-‐breathe   crea'vity  and  innova'on  such  as  chefs,  writers,  photographers,  fashion  designers,  inventors  and  taVoo  ar'sts.  They   will  view  your  idea  through  their  unique  crea've  lens  to  help  make  your  BIG  idea  even…BIGGER.
  • 4. You  might  be  developing  a  new  product  geared  toward  moms  and  want  to  include  some  relevant  bells-‐and-‐whistles.     We  can  enlist  BigHeads  who  understand  how  to  engage  and  communicate  with  moms,  including  producers  from  the   TV   shows   moms   watch   and   bloggers   from   the   sites   moms   visit.   We   can   even   round   out   the   group   with   some   accomplished  mom-‐preneurs  who  will  surely  provide  some  invaluable  recommenda'ons.     Step  3  –  ParYcipant  Approval  &  ConfidenYality:  Once  you  approve  the  recommended  BigHeads  who  will  par/cipate  in   your  project,  each  one  of  them  will  execute  a  comprehensive  NDA  to  protect  your  ideas  and  ensure  you  own  the  rights  to   all  the  feedback  you  receive.     Step  4  –  The  72-‐Hour  Boost:  Over  the  next  72-‐hours,  your  custom  team  of  BigHeads  will  enter  the  secure  online  plajorm   and  offer-‐up  their  unique  crea/ve  insights,  recommenda/ons,  ideas,  builds  and,  yes,  even  cri/cisms.    Simply  put,  they  will   put   their   unique   STAMP   on   your   ideas.     You’ll   even   have   the   opportunity   to   view   their   input   in   real-‐/me   and   communicate  directly  with  our  online  moderator  to  steer  the  discussion.     Step   5   –   The   Report:   Following   the   session,   you’ll   receive   an   execu/ve   summary   of   the   ac/vity   that   synthesizes   the   feedback  provided  by  the  BigHeads,  which  you  can  use  to  stretch,  strengthen  and  boost  your  ideas  to  help  ensure  they   stand  out  in  the  marketplace.   CUSTOM  COLLABORATION     In  the  world  of  open  innova/on  there  is  no  “one-‐size-‐fits-‐all”  solu/on.  So,  while  our  core  approaches  can  be  used  to  tackle   many  objec/ves  (some/mes  in  combina/on),  there  may  be  /mes  when  a  custom  solu/on  is  necessary.  For  those  cases,  we   can  work  with  you  to  design  an  approach  for  your  specific  needs.       CONTACT  INFORMATION   Carlyn  Kelly,  EVP  of  Strategy  and  Innova/on     (m)  203.219.3478     (e)  carlyn@bigheadsnetwork.com
