Do you have heart problems? - Presentation Transcript

      • The Problem of the Heart – Luke 24:13-35
      • Outline for our study
          • Initial situation – eyes prevented from recognizing Jesus
          • The problem – slow of heart
          • Solution – explains the word is about Himself
          • Results – hearts burn and they go tell others that Jesus is alive
      • Now lets review the text in some detail
      • verse 13 - two disciples of Jesus are going from Jerusalem to Emmaus, on what very day is the text referring to here?
      • When having devotion stop long enough to ask where, who, what, when and how questions. It will add much to your observing what is really trying to be said by the author.
      • THE INITIAL SITUATION
      • verses 14-17 - they are talking (throwing words around), the living Lord Jesus arrives on the scene, they are prevented from recognizing Him and they look sad!
      • Other verses in which God concealed or revealed:
          • Matthew 11:25-27
          • Matthew 16:13-17
          • Luke 9:37-45
      • Question : OK guys, bring an application that we can take from these verses?
      • Question: Have you ever had a devotion time, maybe been prevented from seeing Jesus and left not understanding what you read or even somewhat downcast?
      • Question: If God hides something from us do you suppose we can find it?
      • verse 21 – Read this again
      • Question: What problem do we know they have from this verse?
      • They obviously had a bad category when it came to their doctrine about Jesus. It was their belief and it was firmly entrenched in their mind that Jesus was going to be a "conquering King."
      • Of course a proper understanding of the Old Testament would have told them He would first arrive as a "suffering Servant." But Jesus is quick to tell them the real source of their problem.
      • Also Jesus plainly told His disciples the very reason He was heading to Jerusalem
      • Mark 8:31
      • Mark 9:31
      • Mark 10:33-34
      • Question: What things might Christ be plainly telling you right now in your life that you will not hear?
    1. THE PROBLEM verse 25 - “slow of heart to believe” Is it possible we have a heart problem and don't know it? A slow heart, dull heart or hard heart can manifest itself in bad categories about Christ! Question: If Jesus were to show up at you front door tonight, would He say the same thing to you that he said to these disciple? THE SOLUTION Question: So what is the solution for a slow heart, dull heart or hard heart? verse 27 - Jesus explains ( Greek word that means hermeneutics - method for interpretation ) the Scriptures to them starting from Genesis through the prophets. The word of God into a heart that is prepared to receive the word can do a miracle. Question: What truth do you know now for sure about the proper interpretation of the Old Testament?
    2. THE RESULTS verse 31 - Eyes are opened to really see who He is, and with hearts burning they go from Emmaus back to Jerusalem to tell others that Jesus is alive! What a wonderful story for us to see what happens in our lives as we learn who the real Jesus is from the Bible.
    3. Questions to consider from Luke 24:13-15 Is it possible that you have some incorrect categories about the Lord Jesus? Are they related to a heart that is slow or even worse hard? What kind of sin do you recognize in your life now? When is the last time you got quiet before God and confessed these sins? How can you know Christ and yet not know His word? Do you see why we need one another in community, for accountability and growing relationships in Christ?
