Do y ou have heart problems - Part 2

 1. 1. Back to the Basics Read the Bible Study the Bible Devotions in the Bible 2 Corinthians 3:18 “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.”
 2. 2.

Back the the Basics

Why aren’t people in the church consistently studying the Bible?

1. Motivation DEVIL

2. Prioritization FLESH SIN

Skills and Tools WORLD

Spiritual condition

But when you peel the onion all the way back, we initially found that the problem is with the HEART.

The two primary texts we have looked at have been:

Luke 24:13-35 - two disciples on the road to Emmaus

Mark 4:1-20 - the parable of the sower

 3. 3.

The three-fold solution to the obstacles to Bible study

1. HEART that needs preparation

HEAD that needs explanation

FEET that need application

From the standpoint of our teaching I am separating but when it comes to real life they all work together!

Isn't it interesting that Jesus teaches us this truth in the form of a parable.

Do we recognize the power in a parable?

How about what many would consider the most famous parable in the Old Testament?

 4. 4.

Could it be that for weeks, months or years you have been coming to church with hardened hearts toward God?

And this one parable ( like in king David’s life ) is the very section of Scripture that God may use to bring about incredible transformation in your life. (2 Samuel 12:1-7)

Turn again to Mark 4:13-20

“ I think that I shall never see a parable that is unlike a tree”

Do you remember the main point of the parable?

The success of the seed is dependent on the condition of the soil.

The problem WAS NOT with the farmer being able to throw the seed further and harder.

And there WAS NOT a problem with the seed itself.

The problem WAS THE SOIL on which the seed landed.

 5. 5.

And the Lord Jesus teaches on 3 specific problems of the HEART

Hard (the devil)

Shallow(the flesh)

Thorn-invested (the world)

Let’s look at soil problem #1

The word is snatched ( taken away )from the heart!

First let’s do a little study on the 3 different names used for “the evil one” in this parable.

Matthew 13:19 : - “ the evil one”

"When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road.

 6. 6.

There are two words for evil in the Greek

Kakos – this is evil that is of a bad nature.

Example – The kakos man is content to perish in his own destruction.

Poneros – this is evil in active opposition to good.

Example – The poneros man wants to drag everyone else down with him to destruction

In Matthew 13 the word for the evil one is “poneros”

 7. 7. Turn to Luke 8:12 – “the devil” "Those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they will not believe and be saved. The Greek word for devil is “diabolos” – comes from “dia” which means through and from “ballo” which means to cast or to throw. So the devil has the ability to throw thoughts through the mind. Has that every happened to you when you are driving down the road, or just sitting at your desk. And all of a sudden some thought comes in from outer space!
 8. 8. Turn to Mark 4:15 – “the Satan” “ These are the ones who are beside the road where the word is sown; and when they hear, immediately Satan comes and takes away the word which has been sown in them. In the Hebrew Satan means adversary. He is the one who is constantly accusing and against us. By the way it doesn’t show in our English translations but the word Satan is preceded by the definite article “the.” And that is to emphasize that he isn’t just an adversary he is the adversary.
 9. 9.

The word is sown into the heart, then it starts to germinate and all of a sudden the evil comes comes and TAKES AWAY the word.

Last week we talked about the verb “take away” means with aggressive force.

What does Scripture teach us about the devil?

2 Corinthians 2:11 - so that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes .

The word for schemes means an evil purpose or a mental perception or thought.

Schemes occurs 6 times in the New Testament and 4 of them are related to Satan.

2 Corinthians 11:3 - But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.

 10. 10.

Scheme #1 – Distraction or Busyness

Example: Sales people

After burn – A past event happens in which it impedes a present behavior

Reach back – A future event that is looming that impedes present behavior

But this is the way lots of people attend SS and church. They are so emotionally frustrated by past week or so stress about events coming in the next week that it takes them for the here and now!

Cathy Overcash – It’s craziness, it’s nuts!

 11. 11. The poll that I posted on the web site about the primary obstacle to Bible study 75% responded priority – which simply means we are distracted and busy, being kept from keeping the main thing the main thing. Illustration: A basket filled with objects and no more objects will go into the basket. Now our class comes into your life and starts to add Bible reading, devotion and study. This means you have to look in your basket and take out what isn’t important and put in what is vitally important. People go to bed late consumed from the day, watch the 11 PM news and then waked up consumed with what is getting ready to take place and read the morning paper. And we wonder why everyone is so distracted. We have more gadgets and technology and we get less done now than our parents generation.
 12. 12.

Scheme #2 – Division

If we knew the statistics regarding church splits and closing directly attributable to divisions of method and not message it would shock us!

The 3 era’s of American history – Dick Hubbard

Agricultural – everyone worked hard, lived together, many generations were in same place all focused on a common goal

Industrial – began in mid 1860’s and was the first time in our history that the family was ever separated. People moved from the farm to the city and now the family is divided

Technologica l – The late 1950’s till today – In this era the family rarely live in the same town due to job opportunities and travel. And consumer mentality rules the day. It is not about working to give it is about how much can one get from where they go.

 13. 13.

Scheme #2 – Division

It promotes the attitude because it is so engrained within the culture that IT IS ALL ABOUT ME AND WHAT I WANT!

Folks that is a lie straight from the pit of hell

It is all about Christ! John 3:30 – He must increase and I must decrease

What is the most significant division that has been happening over the past 2-3 decades in the evangelical church?

Worship wars – if people get what they want they will stay but if they don’t they will leave. It is the very result of the unholy trinity of “I, ME and MY.”

The devil’s strategy in to bring division by reinterpreting the word just like in the garden

 14. 14. If you spot division in a church or a home among Christians they you can know the Spirit is missing. Because there is and never has been nor will there ever be division and disunity when the Spirit is moving and working in the church. Turn to James 3:14-16 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.
 15. 15. Scheme #3 – Dullness of spiritual sight to the point of blindness 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
 16. 16.

How are we to respond to these schemes of the devil?

James 4:7

“… Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

1 Peter 5:8-9

Be of sober spirit, be on the alert Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him , firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.

 17. 17.

Resistance Plan

Ephesians 6:11

Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil .

Belt of truth

Breastplate of righteousness

Shod feed with the preparation of the gospel

Shield of faith

Helmet of salvation

Sword of the Spirit

There is only ONE offensive weapon listed

Two words for “sword” - this one “macharia” is an 18” dagger

Two words for “word” - this one is “rhema”

 18. 18. Three verses where word is translated “rhema” Eph. 6:17 “… and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God Romans 10:17 - “So faith comes from hearing and hearing from the word of Christ.” Matthew 4:4 - "'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"
 19. 19. A specific word from God’s word Distraction and Busyness Psalm 46:10 – “Be still and know that I am God” Colossians 3:1-2 – “Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.” Division Ephesians 4:1-3 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
 20. 20. Dullness to the point of spiritual blindness 2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who said, "Light shall shine out of darkness," is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. Romans 10:13 For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
