  • The "Core Knowledge" movement is an educational reform based on the premise that a grade-by-grade core of common learning is necessary to ensure a sound and fair elementary education, according to the Core Knowledge Web site. The movement was started by Professor E. D. Hirsch, Jr., author of Cultural Literacy and The Schools We Need , and is based on a large body of research in cognitive psychology, as well as a careful examination of several school systems Hirsch thought to be the world's fairest and most effective.

    7. 7. Teachers’ experience • Average years of teaching experience: 5 • Percent of teachers teaching in the subject in which they received their degree: 50% • Teachers with three years or more of teaching experience: 18 • Teachers with less than three years of teaching experience: 10

Support staff • 18 classroom assistants • Large exceptional student services staff: 5 paraprofessionals, 4 special education service providers (speech, occupational therapy, psychologist, social work) • 1 staff member that works with students with Advanced Learning Plans • 3 administrators — 1 full-time principal and 2 part-time assistant principals.

    14. 14. No advanced courses Although the school has no advanced courses, Principal Mary Ann Mahoney pointed out that “many of our algebra students do not need to take algebra in high school. Some students move directly to Spanish 2 when they enter high school.”

Special classes • BETYOU (Building and Enrichment Time for Youth) is a program for grades three through five that offers a wide variety of extra classes for elementary students ranging from cooking to karate and book studies to Chinese language study. • In the middle school, Lincoln Academy offers several electives that are not common in middle schools in the neighborhood: multimedia, film study, and specialized science classes.
