  • BILLBOARD MAGAZINEBackground and analysis of pages
  • BACKGROUND OF BILLBOARDMicro Analysis:Billboard is an American music magazine that tracks the most popular songs and albums on a weekly basis. To dothis they base the results on radio airplay, physical sales, and digital sales and then create a list of the top 100and that is the billboard chart. From my research, I found on Wikipedia that the first publication was printed in 1894 by the companyPrometheus Global Media. The magazine is still being printed today and is one of the best selling musicmagazines in the UK. On the company’s website- http://www.prometheusgm.com there is a section aboutBillboard magazine that gives a brief description what Billboard is like and a positive view of their magazine - Ihave quoted from the website that ‘’ its award-winning website to its iconic, authoritative weekly publication,Billboard content is consumed by millions of people in more than 100 countries. ‘’ On this section there is a setof images and this shows the development of the magazine company as it starts with printed magazine, thenlinks to facebook then shows how they have used New media technology with their magazine, for example theiphone and the laptop. From this page are links to the Billboard website which is http://www.billboard.com. The website is brilliant andhas convergences such as their news section. • According to Alexa- The web information company I found that they have a very fast loading time for the billboard webpage that it just 1.184 seconds, 60% of sites are slower than this. I also found from the chart below that Billboard have a target audience of both females and males from ages 18 -24. Most of the audience are at college or have finished college however there is still quite a large number of people that are not in college as well, which means there must be some younger people interested in the magazine but are not listed in the research that was carried out. The blue writing is very effective as it clear and stands out against the the articles are about and can easily locate any specificwhite background. On the left hand side Billboard have created their own personal chars list which gives an articles they are looking for.inside look to the magazine and gives the audience good information on the first page, this is helpful for theaudience and makes them feel like they can get quick access to the latest tunes. The publisher of thismagazine is IPC media which is known in the UK as being a leading magazine publisher in the UK. IPC media printed thefirst copy of NME on 7 th March 1952. However back when it was first published it wasn’t a magazine; instead it was morelike a newspaper and printed on newspaper instead of glossy paper. On 14 th November 1952, just eight months later themagazine took influence from US Magazine Billboard and created the first UK Singles Chart.Since then the magazine has grown and become one of the most popular music magazines in England. NME have manyconventions as they launched NME.com in 1996 and then developed their magazine onto the website with the help of newmedia technology. Today NME.com has around 5 million users per month. Famous for its industry-leading music news, world exclusives, breadth ofreviews, video content and in-depth features, NME.com is the digital archive of the NME, with over 30,000 newsstories, reviews and features in its database. • NME: CONTENTS PAGE Layout: The layout of this magazine is quite cool as itImages: The images used are all different types had lots of images on the page but still hasof shots; there are close up, different angled space for lots of text. Each photograph has ashot and medium shots. NME have used the descriptive text. I like the way the images aremost images on their contents page and this placed around the centre image so we aremakes the page look interesting . Each drawn to the centre first, and then our eyephotograph has a number over it which shows follows the pages and images round to see allthe audience what page to find the article the articles. The layout makes this complicatedrelated to the image. where it is. There is a small page of text and images look simple and wedescription under these photographs as I think can navigate around it very easily. I like howthat it gives a quick inside as to what the article NME have places lines around the page towill be about.. It’s difficult to know which is the section areas off and make it clear that themain image, as the one in the centre is thebiggest we would guess its that one however page is decided up.this is just to show you get a free poster andisnt the main article.. Content: The content is probably the most important part of this page as it needs to give enough information to the audience about each page so they can understand what the articles are aboutTypography: and can easily locate any specific articles theyThe text on the contents page shows the are looking for. NME have used images moreaudience where to find the main articles, than they have words and this is effective as thethis page only shows the main topics and images grab our attention quicker and give morethen has a small section to sum up other meaning to us straight away. By looking at theparts of the magazine. The text is very top right image I can tell there is going to be ansimple and straight to the point so it’s article about Lana Del Ray without having toquick to read so we can get straight to the read the text. One thing that NME has thatarticles. other magazines don’t on their contents page is that NME have placed some advertising on their contents page to encourage readers to sign up to their magazine and get a discounted price of the magazine.

Under the heading is they have come up with and they show usa brief introduction to the article and has his answers. The interview is quite seriousThe colours used are bright and have a big at the start as NME start off with questionsimpact as they really get out attention. Yellow about his music history and finding outis an unusual colour to use and this keeps information about reuniting or making awith the themes of the Noel Fielding pages as film.he is quite strange. Having black and red textreally show up well against the yellowbackground, and the red target board is clearand uses the same colours from a real target. Layout: The layout of this double page spread is quite similar to the layout of the front cover. Once again NME has sectionedTypography: Main Image: The image is a full body shot of Noel Fielding. The image is large their magazine so the main image is onThe text is simple and feels like a and takes up a whole page. The photograph has been taken in a studio to get the the right and separate from the rest ofconversation between the magazine and good quality, and then it has been edited to make it appear that he is on a target the page and the text in all on the leftNoel. This is mainly because there is a brief board. The image shows him wearing the same clothing as on the front cover and hand side. Having the text all together isinterview between them but before that we makes the magazine link together as we can recognise that this will be the main neat and simple and makes it easier toare introduced to Noel. So the content is at a article of the magazine. • Q MAGAZINE
  • BACKGROUND FOR QMacro Analysis:Using Wikipedia I researched about Q magazine and found that Q is a popular music magazine published monthlyin the United Kingdom. Q magazine was first published in October 1968 by the company Bauer Media Group. Themagazine stood out from competitors because of their high standard of photography and printing. The magazine used to be sub-titled ‘’The modern guide to music and more’’ and the original name of themagazine was actually ‘’Cue’’ however they didn’t want people to be mistaken and think the magazine was aboutsnooker. Q magazine has a few convergences such as TV and Radio as well as their magazine. On Bauer Media Group’s website -http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/ there is a section about all of the brands theyown and there is a specific section about Q. This page and their whole website is laid out quite simply and thecolour scheme is kept to a minimum of grey and white tones with clear black text. I personally find their websiteslightly boring however it’s easy to navigate around and shows everything a viewer would need to know sooverall it is a good website. On the section of Q magazine it says that the magazine is a cross -platform brand thatdiscovers music that the consumers are interested in and will enjoy. On the website they have said - ‘’Q’saudience is composed of passionate, engaged and open minded music fans driven to continually discover newmusic- and to use this lust for discovery to influence their friends.’’ I researched into the audience of Q magazineand round 75% of consumers are male, and 25% female (ABC1)Frequency: MonthlyPublisher: Bauer Media GroupTotal circulation: 80,418First issue: October 1986Country: United Kingdom

  • REFLECTION ON RESEARCH:What have you learnt from your research into front covers, contents pages and doublepage spreads?•I have learnt that Billboard magazine is my main inspiration as it’s up to date and modernas it includes the latest hits and gives interesting articles about the celebrities and givesmore of an inside to their life and how they are as people as well as being artists. I want tolay my pages out similarly to Billboard and NME as they are simple and modern. I havecompared different magazines of the same genre to see how each layout is effective- todraw people in better. I will use my knowledge of photography to take the correctphotographs to try and get the best quality and best images suitable for my magazine.
  • FLAT PLANNING
  • NME FLAT PLAN I bought NME’s magazine because I preferred some of their layouts from my research such as the front cover and contents page as I thought it looked neat and professional. So I decided to look at the whole layout of their magazine to then take inspiration from for my magazine layout.
  • USES AND GRATIFICATION THEORY By Rebecca Roulstone
  • WHAT IS IT?Uses and Gratifications Theory is an approach to understanding why people actively seek out specificmedia outlets and content for gratification purposes. The theory discusses how users proactively searchfor media that will not only meet a given need but enhance knowledge, social interactions and diversion .It assumes that members of the audience are not passive but take an active role in interpreting andintegrating media into their own lives. The theory also holds that audiences are responsible for choosingmedia to meet their needs. The approach suggests that people use the media to fulfil specificgratifications. This theory would then imply that the media compete against other information sources forviewers gratification. –Wikipedia. From my understanding the Gratification theory is understanding why people pick certain magazines andthe theories from the past can help explain this. Gratification theory is important for my project as I wantto understand my audience and know what specific media outlets and content they would like and I needto be able to meet their needs when creating my magazine for it to be successful. From the definitionabove it says that it assumes people integrate media into their own lives however I would like to explorethis and find out if my audience do use new media technology (NMT) such as iPads to read magazines oraccessing radio stations on their phones and other media sources in their lives.
  • Over the years new theorists have come to light and shared their thoughts and theories about thegratification theory. Obviously the theories have changed over time because of the changes within societyand media.1944 Herta Herzog: began to look at the earliest forms of uses and gratifications with her work classifying thereasons why people chose specific types of media. She interviewed soap opera fans and was able to identifythree types of gratifications. The three gratifications categories from why people listened to soap operas, were emotional, wishful thinking, and learning.1970 Abraham Maslow: argued that people actively looked to satisfy their needs based on a hierarchy. Thepyramid hierarchy began on the bottom with Biological/Physical, Security/Safety, Social/Belonging, Ego/Self -Respect and Self-actualization at the top.1954 Wilbur Schramm: developed the fraction of selection, a formula for determining which form of massmedia an individual would select.1969 Jay Blumler and Denis McQuail: began to study why people watched political program on television. In 1972 they decided the gratification could be spilt into four groups; diversion, personal relationships, personal identity and surveillance.1973-1974 McQuail, Blumler, Brown, Elihu Katz, Michael Gurevitch and Hadassah Haas: Found in their mediaexploration that their research began to indicate how people saw the mass media. The most recent interest surrounding Uses and Gratifications Theory is the link between the reason whymedia is used and the achieved gratification
  • THE 4 BASIC NEEDS.The audience only have 4 basic needs which are listed below. I have written what each mean in terms of what they want from the media.1. Diversion- The need to escape from every day life (escapism)2. Personal relationships- People use the media to fulfil their need for companionship and to help form social groups and having common interests with people.3. Personal identity- The media helps the audience find things out about themselves, and the media can help present and reflect us.4. Surveillance- Using the media to find out what’s going on around us. For example radio news, TV news, TV updates on music charts and most importantly magazines for updates on celebrities and music.
  • APPLYING THE USE AND GRATIFICATIONS THEORY.I am going to look at the contents page on Billboard and show the use andgratification theory.Diversion: Reading a magazine is a great way to escape the world and beinterested in all the articles the magazine has to offer such as inside gossipon celebrities and exclusive access to new tracks that will appear in thecharts.Personal relationships: Reading magazines keeps you up to date with thelatest news in the music industry and also about celebrities that arepopular., This helps the audience with friends as they will have topics todiscuss from all the new information they have gathered and found out. Ithelps people find common interests such as being interested in the samecelebrity or style of music and the contents page helps that as it makes thearticles easy to find and shows pictures of recognisable people theaudience is interested in.Personal identity: At the bottom of the contents page is access to gigs andevents plus exclusive information which can make the audience moreinvolved. The celebrities in the magazine can be iconic and in some waysrelate to the audience as the audience can feel as if they are somehowreflected in the magazine articles.Surveillance: The contents page shows all the information in the magazineand shows the audience the articles and interviews with celebrities. Theimages help show what celebrities will be included in the magazineand shows the audience the celebrities thoughts and views onthings.
  • FIND YOUR TRIBE
  • FIND YOUR TRIBE Find your tribe is an online survey that asks 20 questions to find out what sort of person you are and then you can see how many certain ‘tribes’ are in the area you live and around the UK. There are 26 different tribes at the moment but there is an option at the very end of the quiz which allows people to create a new tribe if they feel the tribe the website said they were was wrong. The website may not addthis new tribe to their list but could be considered if there are many similar people. I am going to do the test to see what tribe I am, and then ask everyone who does my survey to do it as well and so I can add tribes into my research.
  • QUESTION 1: The first question gathers basic information about you such as your age, sexuality, relationship and the type of area you live in. This builds up a profile of the person doing the survey and helps determine what they are like.
  • QUESTION 3: Find what sort of person you are by looking at your interests and what decisions you would make.
  • QUESTION 5: This finds out where you live as the area you are In will have an affect on what you are like and it also helps the survey creators build up a database of what tribes are in certain areas.
  • QUESTION 9: Then they find out some of your favourite websites from a list provided. Personally I think the list doesnt cover enough websites as I like to read blogs and this isnt an option. The answers are quite vague and broad but understandably they can’t list every website in the world.
  • QUESTION 10: This part helps build up your personality, wh at programmes you watch on TV shows what type of person you are. If you like funny TV shows, or Dramas or science programmes.
  • QUESTION 11: Finding what things you read helps build up more of your personality and shows what your interested in. There are also questions that ask about what newspapers you read and what radio station you listen to, as this builds up more of a profile.
  • QUESTION 14: The questions then change to then ask about what brands, products and things you either love or hate.
  • Then it leadsonto the results. In my area, 12%are townies and 12% are indies and 10% are scene kids. The other 66% are smaller tribes and there are probably small percentages of each.
  • This is a list of all the possible tribesyou could be. If you feel like you don’t fit into one of these ‘tribes’ you can write on the right hand side what tribe youthink you should be in and it asks you to name the tribe and write a description. I think this helps the survey website get to know more about thepopulation and see if they are missing out anything.
  • FINAL RESULT: My result is a townie! I think it’s quite accurate as most of the description is true however I don’t think it fully defines me fully. From using this information, I can find out what most of my audience ‘tribe’ is and then read about them to know what sort of personality they have.
  • MUSIC MAGAZINE SURVEY
  • SURVEY Aims: Doing this survey I hope to achieve a good understanding of potentialaudiences. I want to ask some key questions that will help me decide whatstyle I will do my magazine and find what key parts my audience wants in a music magazine. What to expect: I hope to find what parts the audience would want to find and expect inthe whole magazine and on certain parts, such as the double page spread. Also I want to know what my audience is like to see what they’re interests are and I’ll gather this information from their ‘tribe’
  • QUESTION 1: This is a basic question (which should be included in surveys so you know who your target audience.) will give me information to put onto my reader profile for the Male and Female figures. I asked 10 people to take my survey. I sent out a link on Facebook to my friends and after 10 people had completed the survey. I stopped the survey and took in the results. The result is that 60% of people who took my survey were female and 40% were male.
  • QUESTION 2: This question was asked so I could work out the average age of my audience. As the survey was taken by my peers I expected the results to be around a similar age to mine as I am aiming this magazine at people from the ages 17- 19. My results support my decision to aim for this age audience. So I feel confident my magazine will appeal to them as I have selected the right age group. 40% are 18 30% are 17 20% are 20 10% are 16.
  • QUESTION 3: I asked this question so I could look into the lives of my audience a bit more. I want to know if they are earning any money to go towards things such as magazines and gigs. The results show that most of my audience do have a job which means that they do have some money to spend however they might not have lots of time to go to lots of festivals. 70% have a job 30% are unemployed.
  • QUESTION 4: This question was asked to get more detail out of the previous question. If someone said they did have a job I was interested if it was full time or part time as having a part time job could indicate they are at college or university. The result was that most of my audience had a part time job which shows me that the rest of their time is being taken up; for example school. 70% part time job 30% full time job
  • QUESTION 5: I asked this question to see what my audience does outside of their job or school, so firstly I asked how often do they go out to do things. The results were that most of my audience went out ‘most days’. This shows me that quite a lot of my audience like to go out and socialise witheach other. This means I should include interesting things that they will like to read about in my magazine so then they have something current and trendy to talk about to friends. 50% most days 20% some days 20% every day 10% weekends
  • QUESTION 6: Following on from the previous question, I then wanted to know where people go to socialise. I gave a list of places and I made the survey so they could click as many places asthey like as people go to different places everyday so only allowing one answer to be chosen will limit my results. The result was that most people go to house parties to socialise. This shows me that peoplewant a good night out but may be limited where to go or because of age restrictions. There is a variety of places people go but this helps me know the most popular places for my audience. 7 people chose house parties 3 people chose pub 6 people chose friends 2 people chose cinema 3 people chose shops 2 people chose clubs 3 people chose gym 2 people chose gigs 1 person chose festivals.
  • QUESTION 7:This was sticking to the aim to get to know my audience a bit more personally, although my magazineis aimed at music I want to see what other interests people have to get to know my audience for the reader profile. This question was multiple choice as people have many hobbies so my results show that going out and doing sports are the most popular hobby. going out chosen 7 times Sports chosen 5 times shopping chosen 3 times photography chosen 2 times art chosen once Reading chosen once Cooking chosen once
  • QUESTION 8: Then I wanted to look at what brands people like, similar to fine my tribes questions. This helps me know what my audience like most and what they are like. My results show jack wills, superdry and topshop are the most favourite brands.
  • QUESTION 9: I asked this question to once again get to know about my audience more, whattechnology they like as phones like iphone allow people to get apps and go on the internet which could be something to think about for making a magazine. The results show that iphone and blackberry’s are equal with 4 votes each. The second best which is also tied is nokia phones and androids. 40% iphone 40% blackberry 10% nokia 10% Android
  • QUESTION 10: Now I am moving on to questions more about music magazines. Firstly I want to know if people do actually buy music magazines often which would let me know if my magazine should be monthly or weekly. My results show a mix of results as the highest result was both often and sometimes withnever being second! This mix shows that some of my audience might not be as interested in music as I expected but about half of the results show some positivity about reading them often. 30% often 30% sometimes 20% never 10% not often 10% very often.
  • QUESTION 11: This was a key question as from my research I had come to the conclusion that I preferred billboard and NME for their layout, but it was important my audience liked the style of my magazine and this would help me decide if I should conform to convergences or not. The result of this was really good as my audience chose NME and billboard as their favourites which means my audience like the same styles as I do which will help my decision making as I can try to think in the way of my audience. 40% NME 30% Billboard 20% Q 10% Vibe
  • QUESTION 12:This question is to work out how much I should price my magazine at so i can attract my target audience without being too expensive and having to compete with the bigger music magazines. Most of my audience did say they have jobs so I was happy to see that most of my audience would pay up to £4 for a magazine which I think is quite reasonable. This result has helped me know what price to make my magazine, which I have decided to price at £3 because when you work out the average it’s about £3. 50% £4 20% £3 20% £2 10% £1 Average price £3.10
  • QUESTION 13: From looking at music magazine websites such as NME I noticed how they advertise lots of festivals and try to give good prices to their readers. Thismade me interested to see how many people do attend these festivals to see if I should promote festivals. The results show quite a mix again as some attend very often and others rarely.Seeing as rarely was the most voted for I think my magazine focus should be on other topics. 40% Rarely 20% Sometimes 20% Often 20% Very often
  • QUESTION 14: This is a very important question as this is what type of magazine I will be making. I havedecided personally from my research that I like mainstream and Indie styled magazines such as NME and Billboard. However it has to be decided by my audience as it is them I have to appeal to.The results are positive as it shows that my audience also like Mainstream, Indie and rock! So this means the genre of my magazine can be mainstream like the magazine I researched – Billboard. Mainstream chosen 5 times Indie chosen 5 times Rock chosen 5 times Urban chosen 3 times Hip-hop chosen 2 times Metal chosen 2 times Electro chosen once
  • QUESTION 15: This is a general question of what my audience expect when buying a music magazine. I asked this so I can make sure I include everything to make my audience happy. The result shows quite a mix as people voted for every option I gave them. The most popular result was interview so this means I should definitely include an interview. 50% interview 30% Backstage cover 10% Top 40 chart 10% Posters.
  • QUESTION 16: This question was to get a bit more of a detailed response as the double page spread will have the most information on it and it needs to be able to be right for my audience. On the double page spread my audience has shown that they want to have exclusive information given to them. So i am going to combine an interview with the exclusive information to try and satisfy the audience most. 50% Exclusive information 30% New bands and music 20% Interviews
  • The website I used doesn’t show the open choice answers in the final results, so I have had to go through each answer and find what everyone put. 6 out of 10 people said they were Indie Scenesters 3 out of 10 people said they were Townies And 1 person put that they are a clubber. This clearly shows that the most dominant tribe are the Indie scenesters. They will be my targeted social group and I will conduct more research tothen know how to present my magazine and how to use mise-en scene for my images.
  • CONCLUSION From my survey I have found out what my audience is really like, their age, gender andinterests. I also know their opinions about music magazines so I now know what needs to be included in my magazine to ensure my audience will be interested in my magazine. I chose to make my magazine a mainstream magazine as my survey supported that it wouldbe a popular choice and I also think it works well with my magazine masthead ‘current’ as the top 40 charts change all the time as music trends change and so my magazine will focus on what is current. Billboard is the magazine I preferred most in my research however I am still going to take influence from NME magazine as it was another popular result from my audience. I am going to price my magazine at £3 and because it is a reasonably low price I would make the magazine weekly as I feel as some of my target audience would be loyal every week but some will buy the magazine when something stands out to them. My contents page will be like the style of NME as I like the simple layout and the overall feel of it. As my audience said that they preferred NME so I feel confident they will like the page. My double page spread needs to be interesting so I am going to do an interview that givesexclusive information to my audience as they said that these were the most important things they wanted from a music magazine. On my reader profile on the next slide I have put together what my audience is like.
