    ADVERBS OF MANNER DO YOU KNOW HOW TO FORM AND USE THEM?

    • We use adverbs of manner to describe verbs
    • Adverbs of manner explain how an action was done.
    • They answer the question how
    • BUT… HOW CAN WE FORM THEM?
    Use
  • 4. Form
    • They were studying quietly
    • These adverbs are formed by adding –LY to the end of an adjective.
    • great – greatly
    • quick – quickly
  • 5. Form: spelling
    • If the adjective ends in –y: <y> changes into <i> and we add –ly
    • happy – happily
    • He received the cup happily
  • 6.
    • If the adjective ends in –ble, it changes into
    • – bly
    • Respondible – responsibly
    • If the adjective ends in –le, -e is dropped and we add –ly
    • Gentle - gently
    Form: spelling
  • 7. If the adjective ends in –ic, we add –ally Automatic – automatically There are others which are irregular Good – well Hard – hard Fast – fast Form: spelling
