  2. 2. VacCircTM<br />Vacuum Enhanced <br />Re-circulation System<br /><ul><li>VacCirc is a trade mark for a patent pending method of soil and groundwater remediation using in-well stripping, vapor extraction and groundwater re-circulation.
  3. 3. VacCirc performs two-phase extraction without removing water.
  4. 4. The VacCirc method strips up to 99 % volatile organic compounds such as petroleum hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents from groundwater during recirculation. Groundwater is re-circulated within the treatment zone.
  5. 5. VacCirc is effective treating chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons. VacCirc also increases in-situ aerobic bioremediation. It can be enhanced by addition of oxygen or ozone to the release wells.

VacCirc may be applied as a source removal, as a final polishing method after core remediation and as a barrier to prevent further migration of contaminants</li></li></ul><li>2<br />VacCircTM System Outline<br />VacCirc is a trademark for the Vacuum Driven Re-Circulation System, an innovative method that uses a vacuum to re-circulate groundwater in the treatment zone. <br />The VacCirc System can be used as a single well re-circulation application by re-circulating groundwater between the deeper and shallower zones separated by bentonite seal and a packer. Since water is never extracted out of the subsurface, with a comprehensive monitoring and sampling plan a discharge permit may not be necessary. <br />During VacCirc, vapor from the subsurface is extracted and treated onsite using a vapor treatment unit (thermal/catalytic oxidation unit or carbon unit). Extracted vapor may be re-injected into the injection or observation wells within the zone of vacuum influence as a passive injection to reduce emission, heat the subsurface soil to enhance biodegradation. <br />Dissolved oxygen may be added to the re-circulated water to enhance bioremediation. Chemical oxidation substance (Klozure or Permanganate) may be added to re-circulating water to perform in-situ chemical oxidation Oxygen or ozone gas may be injected into the wells within the vacuum zone of influence to enhance bioremediation or perform direct oxidation (ozone).<br />

VacCircTMSystem Benefits<br />The VacCirc System removes (strips) 80-90 % of the volatiles from groundwater during each recirculation cycle.<br />Using re-circulation vs. conventional two-phase extraction and removal eliminates a need for treatment and disposal of the extracted water and enhances naturally occurring biodegradation.<br />Groundwater is re-circulated multiple times in the contaminated zone during the process. Each re-circulation cycle will remove up to 90 % of VOCs from groundwater. Cleaner groundwater as being re-circulated in subsurface will also remove adsorbed contaminant from the soil matrix. <br />The system may be enhanced by adding an iSOC unit or an ozone generator to increase biodegradation in the subsurface.<br />VacCirc will remove even hard to strip compounds such as 1,4-dioxane after multiple recirculation and stripping cycles. Given that each cycle strips 10% to 20% of 1,4-dioxane, after 10 to 20 recirculation cycles, 60% to 98% of the 1,4-dioxane will be removed. <br />
  18. 18. VacCircTM System Cost <br />The cost estimate varies based on site specific parameters, depth to groundwater, type of contaminant and vapor treatment alternative. Bays Environmental Remediation Management (BERM) will assist with well design and installation, wellhead assembly design and installation for a unit cost of per recirculation cell.
