Editorial
We've stepped into 2014 and I'm sure each one of us would have made new resolutions, some to keep
and some to break, including some in our respective fields of work. The New Year was welcomed
differently in different parts of the world - North America and UK witnessed peculiar natural phenomena
at the beginning of the year. While the Polar Vortex is making parts of North America compete with Mars,
recording lowest temperatures in centuries, across the Atlantic 30 ft. odd waves have been battering the
coasts of UK. However, back home it was a moment to cheer with India emerging as a key space capable
nation with only three others to give us company. We also saw an interesting 'first of a kind' political
development with the emergence of a new political party and a new Chief Minister for the capital state.
2014 is destined to bring even greater change in the political ecosystem of the country with General
Elections unfolding in a few months’ time. Hope 2014 brings with it a more economically successful and
vibrant year than the year gone by.
Come January and we gear up to participate in the most awaited event of the year - The Foundation Day.
This year the 148th Foundation Day will be celebrated across locations on 2nd February 2014. Our hearts
are filled with immense pride and joy as this day reminds us of our great heritage and the fact that our
Company has stood the test of time, and emerged as a leading business house of the country.
Preparations have begun at all locations in full swing and we are confident of enjoying a fun filled show
with our colleagues and families.

Top Management Meet
The Top Management Meet was held at Tolly Club in Kolkata on 20th and 21st December 2013.

BL Updates

SBU:LI organized a Customer Meet on 6 th December 2013 at GRT Grand Hotel in Chennai. The event was
organised for an interaction with the trade, to appreciate their concerns and suggestions for further
improvement. Key officials from the Shipping lines, NVOCCs, Importers and Exporters had gathered in
large numbers and the response was very good.

held across SBUs and other

first meeting held in this new
conference room.
On 25th December, the New Administrative Office Building at IP-Asaoti was inaugurated by Mr. Anand Dayal,
Director [Manufacturing Businesses]. On this occasion a plantation program was also organized.
As part of its continuous branding efforts, G&L –Kolkata was one of the sponsors of the Jamini Mela
organized to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of the famous painter Jamini Roy. It also sponsored
a cultural programme organized by Acharya Jayanta Bose at Kalamandir.

A free Health Check-up Camp for all employees was organised at HO, Kolkata on 11th December, at CFS
and W&D, Kolkata on 24th December 2013, at G&L, Kolkata on 3rd January and IP, Kolkata on 8th January
2014. In photo are glimpses of the camp held at HO, Kolkata.

Around Christmas, a "Secret Santa" celebration was organised at the Tours & Travel Office in Mumbai. All
the employees including the outsourced staff participated with much enthusiasm. Participants were truly
delighted to receive their "Secret Santa" gifts that were chosen keeping in mind their personalities.
BL participates in AIMA HR Quiz
Mr. Abhilash Ramaria, Asst. Manager [HR] - CFS Mumbai and Mr. Aniket Preetish, Asst. Manager [HR] Silvassa formed a team to represent the Company at the inaugural HR Quiz competition ‘Shakti’ organized
by AIMA. The team answered some truly tough questions and won attractive prizes in the regional round
held at Mumbai on 19th December 2013. It was a good platform for the duo to interact with HR
professionals from the industry, and they were grateful for the opportunity given to them.

HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) Corner
CHEMICAL HYGIENE & ITS RISK CATEGORIZATION:
Many chemicals are routinely handled in the laboratory. The hazardous nature of a chemical depends not
only on what it is, but also on how it is handled. In determining the hazardous nature of a chemical, please
consider the characteristics of the chemical. Most chemicals fall into one of four categories:
IGNITABLE - a chemical with a flashpoint of less than 140°F
CORROSIVE - a chemical with pH less than 2 or greater than 12.5 (i.e. strong acid and bases)
REACTIVE - a chemical that is explosive, shock sensitive, reacts to produce heat, light or toxic products or
combines violently with air or water
TOXIC - a chemical that has an adverse effect on organisms in relatively low doses or small quantities
The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) system utilizes a diamond diagram, divided into four color
coded sections:
1. Blue for health hazard
2. Red for fire hazard
3. Yellow for reactivity hazard
4. White for other hazard information

Within each section, a number ranks the degree of hazard:
4 means extreme hazard; 3 means serious hazard; 2 means moderate hazard; 1 means slight hazard; 0
means no or minimal hazard;
The white section alerts the user to special hazards the material may possess, such as:
water reactivity; strong oxidizer Ox; corrosivity; radioactivity; Poison.

Vol. 4 Issue 1 January 2014 Editorial We've stepped into 2014 and I'm sure each one of us would have made new resolutions, some to keep and some to break, including some in our respective fields of work. The New Year was welcomed differently in different parts of the world - North America and UK witnessed peculiar natural phenomena at the beginning of the year. While the Polar Vortex is making parts of North America compete with Mars, recording lowest temperatures in centuries, across the Atlantic 30 ft. odd waves have been battering the coasts of UK. However, back home it was a moment to cheer with India emerging as a key space capable nation with only three others to give us company. We also saw an interesting 'first of a kind' political development with the emergence of a new political party and a new Chief Minister for the capital state. 2014 is destined to bring even greater change in the political ecosystem of the country with General Elections unfolding in a few months’ time. Hope 2014 brings with it a more economically successful and vibrant year than the year gone by. Come January and we gear up to participate in the most awaited event of the year - The Foundation Day. This year the 148th Foundation Day will be celebrated across locations on 2nd February 2014. Our hearts are filled with immense pride and joy as this day reminds us of our great heritage and the fact that our Company has stood the test of time, and emerged as a leading business house of the country. Preparations have begun at all locations in full swing and we are confident of enjoying a fun filled show with our colleagues and families.   • 2. The Top Management Meet was held at Tolly Club in Kolkata on 20th and 21st December 2013. BL Updates SBU:LI organized a Customer Meet on 6 th December 2013 at GRT Grand Hotel in Chennai. The event was organised for an interaction with the trade, to appreciate their concerns and suggestions for further improvement. Key officials from the Shipping lines, NVOCCs, Importers and Exporters had gathered in large numbers and the response was very good. With the advent of the New Year, Budget Meetings were held across SBUs and other functions. In photo is a glimpse of a budget meeting being held in the Conference Room of the New Administrative Building of G&L – Silvassa. This was the first meeting held in this new conference room.
  • 3. On 25th December, the New Administrative Office Building at IP-Asaoti was inaugurated by Mr. Anand Dayal, Director [Manufacturing Businesses]. On this occasion a plantation program was also organized.
  • 4. As part of its continuous branding efforts, G&L –Kolkata was one of the sponsors of the Jamini Mela organized to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of the famous painter Jamini Roy. It also sponsored a cultural programme organized by Acharya Jayanta Bose at Kalamandir. A free Health Check-up Camp for all employees was organised at HO, Kolkata on 11th December, at CFS and W&D, Kolkata on 24th December 2013, at G&L, Kolkata on 3rd January and IP, Kolkata on 8th January 2014. In photo are glimpses of the camp held at HO, Kolkata. Around Christmas, a "Secret Santa" celebration was organised at the Tours & Travel Office in Mumbai. All the employees including the outsourced staff participated with much enthusiasm. Participants were truly delighted to receive their "Secret Santa" gifts that were chosen keeping in mind their personalities.
  • 5. BL participates in AIMA HR Quiz Mr. Abhilash Ramaria, Asst. Manager [HR] - CFS Mumbai and Mr. Aniket Preetish, Asst. Manager [HR] Silvassa formed a team to represent the Company at the inaugural HR Quiz competition ‘Shakti’ organized by AIMA. The team answered some truly tough questions and won attractive prizes in the regional round held at Mumbai on 19th December 2013. It was a good platform for the duo to interact with HR professionals from the industry, and they were grateful for the opportunity given to them. HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) Corner CHEMICAL HYGIENE & ITS RISK CATEGORIZATION: Many chemicals are routinely handled in the laboratory. The hazardous nature of a chemical depends not only on what it is, but also on how it is handled. In determining the hazardous nature of a chemical, please consider the characteristics of the chemical. Most chemicals fall into one of four categories: IGNITABLE - a chemical with a flashpoint of less than 140°F CORROSIVE - a chemical with pH less than 2 or greater than 12.5 (i.e. strong acid and bases) REACTIVE - a chemical that is explosive, shock sensitive, reacts to produce heat, light or toxic products or combines violently with air or water TOXIC - a chemical that has an adverse effect on organisms in relatively low doses or small quantities The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) system utilizes a diamond diagram, divided into four color coded sections: 1. Blue for health hazard 2. Red for fire hazard 3. Yellow for reactivity hazard 4. White for other hazard information Within each section, a number ranks the degree of hazard: 4 means extreme hazard; 3 means serious hazard; 2 means moderate hazard; 1 means slight hazard; 0 means no or minimal hazard; The white section alerts the user to special hazards the material may possess, such as: water reactivity; strong oxidizer Ox; corrosivity; radioactivity; Poison.   • 6. CSR Update Mr. HK Bhoklay, Executive Director [Corporate Affairs] handed over water backpacks to beneficiaries at Thayong village, Manipur on 12th December 2013. The function was organized by ANMA Integrated Village Development Agency (AIDA), the implementation partner of BL based at Dimapur, Nagaland for distribution of water backpacks in the North East.
