  • 2. Introduction to .NET FrameworkARUN KUMAR K
  • 3. .NET – What Is It?• Software platform• Language neutral• In other words:.Net is a framework for developing web-based andwindows-based applications within the Microsoftenvironment.
  • 4. .NET – What Is It?Operating System + Hardware.NET Framework.NET Application
  • 5. .NET FrameworkCommon Language RuntimeOperating SystemCommon Language Runtime– CLR manages code execution atruntime– Memory management, threadmanagement, etc.
  • 6. .NET FrameworkBase Class LibraryOperating SystemCommon Language Runtime.NET Framework (Base Class Library)– Object-oriented collection of reusabletypes– Collections, I/O, Strings, …
  • 7. .NET FrameworkData Access LayerOperating SystemCommon Language Runtime.NET Framework (Base Class Library)ADO .NET and XML– Access relational databases– Disconnected data model– Work with XML
  • 8. .NET FrameworkASP.NET & Windows FormsOperating SystemCommon Language Runtime.NET Framework (Base Class Library)ADO .NET and XMLASP .NETWeb Forms Web ServicesMobile Internet ToolkitWindowsForms– Create application’s front-end – Web-based user interface, WindowsGUI, Web services, …
  • 9. .NET FrameworkProgramming LanguagesOperating SystemCommon Language Runtime.NET Framework (Base Class Library)ADO .NET and XMLASP .NETWeb Forms Web ServicesMobile Internet ToolkitWindowsFormsC++ C# VB.NET Perl J# …– Use your favorite language
  • 10. .NET FrameworkVisual Studio .NETOperating SystemCommon Language Runtime.NET Framework (Base Class Library)ADO .NET and XMLASP .NETWeb Forms Web ServicesMobile Internet ToolkitWindowsFormsCommon Language SpecificationC++ C# VB Perl J# …VisualStudio.NET
  • 11. The .NET Framework.NET Framework Services• Common Language Runtime• Windows® Forms• ASP.NET– Web Forms– Web Services• ADO.NET, evolution of ADO• Visual Studio.NET
  • 12. Common Language Runtime (CLR)•CLR works like a virtual machine in executing alllanguages.•All .NET languages must obey the rules andstandards imposed by CLR. Examples:– Object declaration, creation and use– Data types, language libraries– Error and exception handling– Interactive Development Environment (IDE)
  • 13. Common Language Runtime• Development– Mixed language applications• Common Language Specification (CLS)• Common Type System (CTS)• Standard class framework• Automatic memory management– Consistent error handling and safer execution• Deployment– Removal of registration dependency– Safety – fewer versioning problems
  • 14. Common Language RuntimeMultiple Language Support• CTS is a rich type system built into the CLR– Implements various types (int, double, etc)– And operations on those types• CLS is a set of specifications that language andlibrary designers need to follow– This will ensure interoperability betweenlanguages
  • 15. Compilation in .NETCode in VB.NET Code in C#Code in another.NET LanguageVB.NET compiler C# compilerAppropriateCompilerIL(IntermediateLanguage) codeCLR just-in-timeexecution
  • 16. Intermediate Language (IL)• .NET languages are not compiled to machine code. Theyare compiled to an Intermediate Language (IL).• CLR accepts the IL code and recompiles it to machinecode. The recompilation is just-in-time (JIT) meaning it isdone as soon as a function or subroutine is called.• The JIT code stays in memory for subsequent calls. Incases where there is not enough memory it is discarded .
  • 17. Languages• Languages provided by MS– VB, Visual C++, C#, J#• Third-parties are building– APL, COBOL, Pascal, Eiffel, Haskell, ML, Oberon,Perl, Python, Scheme, Smalltalk…
  • 18. Windows Forms• Framework for Building Rich Clients– RAD (Rapid Application Development)– Rich set of controls– Data aware– ActiveX® Support– Licensing– Accessibility– Printing support– Unicode support– UI inheritance
  • 19. ASP.NET•ASP.NET,the platform services that allow to programWeb Applications and Web Services in any .NETlanguage•ASP.NET Uses .NET languages to generate HTML pages.HTML page is targeted to the capabilities of therequesting Browser•ASP.NET “Program” is compiled into a .NET class andcached the first time it is called. All subsequent calls usethe cached version.
  • 20. ASP.NET Web Forms• Allows clean cut code– Code-behind Web Forms• Code within is compiled then executed• Support for ASP.NET server controls– Data validation– Data bound grids
  • 21. ASP.NET Web Services• A technical definition– “A programmable application component accessiblevia standard Web protocols”
  • 22. Web Services• It is just an application…• Exposes features and capabilities over thenetwork…• Use XML…• Allow for the creation of powerful newapplications…
  • 23. ADO.NET(Data and XML)• New objects (e.g., DataSets)• Separates connected / disconnected issues• Language neutral data access• Uses same types as CLR• Great support for XML
  • 24. Visual Studio.NET• Development tool that contains a rich set ofproductivity and debugging features
  • 25. Summary• The .NET Framework– Dramatically simplifies development anddeployment– Provides robust and secure execution environment– Supports multiple programming languages
