Our HistoryEver since 1901, BSI has been helpingorganizations improve, capturing best practiceand shaping the standards of excellence inproduct specification, business processesand in business potential. Today, we have over30,000 standards within our portfolio, and arerecognized as shaping many of the most usedand implemented standards worldwide, suchas the Quality and Environment Managementseries (ISO 9001 and ISO 14001) that have beenadopted by over a million organizations all overthe world. It all began with the very first meeting of theEngineering Standards Committee in 1901,convened by Sir John Wolfe-Barry, designer ofLondon’s Tower Bridge. Soon afterwards, BSI’sworld-famous Kitemark was first registered toindicate that products were ‘up to standard’.In the 1920s standardization spread to Canada,Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.1946 saw the first Commonwealth StandardsConference which led to the InternationalOrganization for Standardization (ISO),of which BSI is a founding member. Our standards have been applied to allmanner of goods and services ranging frompersonal safety equipment to air pollutioncontrols, the use of safety colours and eventhe transportation of animals by air.During the second half of the twentieth centurythe emergence of business process standardspushed organizational performance to newlevels. ISO 9001, based on our groundbreakingBS 5750, was the world’s first of thesestandards against which certification could beachieved. This innovative approach led us todevelop similar standards for medical devicemanufacturers, the automotive industry,BSI works to embed excellence throughthe shaping and implementation of standards, helping organizations around the world meetthe challenges of today and anticipate theneeds of tomorrow. We see a future wherestandards will not only shape products andbusiness processes but also create the potentialfor organizations to gain the most fromthe values and principles that govern theirreputation.telecommunications, oil and gas and manyother business and industry sectors. Someof our recent pioneering standards supportbetter risk management including InformationSecurity and IT Service Management(ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 20000 series),Business Continuity (ISO 22301) andsustainability concerns, including SustainableEvents Management (ISO 20121) developedin partnership with LOCOG, the organisingcommittee for the London 2012 Olympic Games.Such systems help organizations defend, protect and enhance their reputation, brandand operations in a cost-effective manner. Most recently we have taken action to supportbusiness concerns around Anti-briberylegislation, introducing a standard to helpprotect organizations, their supply chainsand employees.Product Specification1950 2000190027 28
