  • 3. Fair Trade What What Products Case Study Home What is Fair Trade? Fair Trade is an organisation that want to help those who grow or make things in third world countries to get a better deal for the things that they are selling or making. What does it mean?
    • Fair trade means to sell under a fair-trade agreement. The criteria may vary between traders, however all traders must:
    • Pay a price that covers the cost of living
    • Pay a premium that producers can invest in development
    • Make partial advance payments, when requested by producers
    • Sign contracts that allow for long-term planning and sustainable production practices

Fair Trade Fair Trade Chocolate What Products Case Study Home It tastes better Fair Trade Chocolate “ Unlike many other chocolate manufacturers, we control the whole chocolate making process from the bean to the bar. This allows us to make sure that at every step the high quality we expect is met. It is the key to the true art of chocolate making. When the beans first arrive at the factory, they are checked again for quality to ensure no rogue batches enter the production line. The beans are then roasted to develop their rich flavour. Then we grind the beans and to this smooth paste, we add real Bourbon vanilla and organic sugar. This paste or cocoa mass is then ‘conched’ or stirred for 18 hours to reveal the intense flavour unique to our chocolate. Before pouring the chocolate mixture into moulds to set, it has to be tempered. Well tempered chocolate will have a lovely shine, with no streaks or ‘bloom’ (the white, cloudy appearance chocolate can sometimes have which is caused by the cocoa butter separating from the other ingredients) . It will also have a good ‘snap’ - that sound a quality chocolate bar makes when you break it. At this point, any inclusions are added to the chocolate to create our delicious range of flavours. Of course we use the highest quality inclusions – and in the right quantities to ensure the perfect flavour. In our Dark & Almond bar for example, we caramelise whole almonds to intensify their flavour. This process toasts the nut giving it a deeper, nuttier flavour and creates a slightly sweet, crisp shell. Using whole almonds means we need to use copious amounts of nuts in each bar to ensure each delicious bite has the right combination of flavours. In our mint bar, we go to the other extreme using the smallest amount of real peppermint oil to give that fresh, cool taste of real mint. Fair Trade Case Study What Products Case Study Home It tastes better Fair Trade Chocolate Nelie Kok raisin and sultana farmer in South Africa has been helped by the fair trade sales of Christmas pudding and cake. He says: “ Farming where we live is very difficult. It is hard to earn a livelihood here. "The benefits reaped from fair trade mean that we have had the chance to buy some equipment with some of the premium money. We rent it to the farmers at a very low fee to enable us to maintain it. “ Fair trade also means that we have been able to support local schools with equipment such as study aids, books and computers.” Who Why should we help

Fair Trade Why should we help What Products Case Study Home It tastes better Fair Trade Chocolate Who Fair Trade and other such organisations help the third world producers by giving them an equal amount of money rather than the big supermarkets getting all the money for the product they work to get the supermarkets to give more of the profit of the item to the farmer so that they can have better living and a fairer deal Why should we help We should help because it helps the poorer people in the world to live a better and fuller life and it makes sure that they are much better looked after then if they didn’t have Fair Trade. The food may be more expensive however this means that there is enough money so that these unfortunate people can live a good life. Why?
