  • PORTS (Physical Oceanographic Real-Time System) is operated by USF-DMS in close collaboration with NOAA/NOs. A not-for-profit corporation (GTBMAC-PORTS, Inc.) oversees the system and provides funding from state and local sources. The corporation has representatives from the Tampa Port Authority, the Tampa Bay Pilots, USF, and major shippers (Fla. Power and Cargil) as its Board of Directors and Officers. Data are distributed via phone, dial-up modem, and internet, with dedicated screens located in port authority, pilots, and USCG offices.
  • Groundings in Tampa Bay have decreased from 3 per 1000 transits prior to 1992, when PORTS went operational, to 1 per 1000 transits since PORTS data were used successfully to predict movement of 1993 oil spill in Tampa Bay We are working with the NWS and NOS to develop better storm surge predictions based on our data and models ECOHAB is underway to find ways to predict red tide outbreaks based on physical forcing -- Data from Yucatan critical for this FMRI scientists are collaborating to use our models for fish larve dispersal USF and USGS scientists are collaborating to study sediment transport and coastal response to severe storms
