  • The next section is actually a presentation given by British Petroleum at one of our recent User Conferences. The presentation summarizes their usage of the PI System in a variety of applications , describes the improvements they have made in operational efficiency and health and safety, and describes how they have made the PI System an integral part of their continuous improvement programs.
  • Highlights of BP’s operations in the Gulf of Mexico
  • This graphic shows the drilling platforms operating in the Gulf of Mexico BP is facing numerous operating challenges with sub surface complexities, high well pressures and temperatures, and strong undersea currents. In addition, there was the challenge of how to capture meaningful data from these platforms and provide it in a suitable form within the corporation, for Performance Management. Enter the PI System.
  • BP started with OSI in the 1990’s and has continued to use PI as their data historian. In their words, “We selected PI because in our analysis, we felt it was Reliable, Scalable, Extensible and Interoperable. Over time, we have also learned that the PI System also offers state-of-the-art Security, and is available in a High Availability configuration.” “ OSIsoft delivered value back then and they have continued to deliver value for us each year.”
  • In order to implement the Operations Wide Performance Management vision, BP established a central control facility in Houston, named ACE – the Advanced Collaborative Environment. From this facility, all operations in the Gulf are monitored in real time.
  • As can be seen in this graphic, BP’s Gulf of Mexico operations use the PI System for monitoring all aspects of their operations (rotating equipment, real time drilling performance, drilling visualization, topsides activities, marine status, mooring information, sub-sea surveillance, etc). All data is visible on each platform, and in the ACE.
  • Here we see an example of one of our One Touch Portal communities, Wells. With the release of MOSS2007 compliant RTWebparts, we are developing real time data visualizations that will be incorporated into these views. It will enhance the wells community understanding by displaying alongside their other data how the wells are doing currently.
  • Initially, communication from the platforms was handled via satellite. Due to the success of the system, and the need for additional data, BP is installing a Fiber Optic network under the Gulf of Mexico, to handle the transmission of data from the operating platforms to the ACE.
  • BP is continually looking for new ways to use the PI System for Performance Improvement. In this example, BP is using GIS capabilities from ESRI to overlay weather activity on their operating environment in their Crisis Planning department.
  • Vendors are supporting their assets from the ACE versus making trips offshore DCS support is now happening in the ACE versus staffed offshore BP and the system vendors are solving operational problems faster Supporting more assets with scarce resources Operational efficiency is at an all time high.
  • The Real Time data architecture from OSIsoft gives BP ability to collaborate across the miles. The PI system has shown over and over that it is reliable and scalable, and able to grow with our needs. This is not a project with a defined scope and end point. It has become a continuous improvement journey and is now an integral part of the continued success of our business.
