  • When you hear the word “curation” you probably think of some crusty old academic type, locked away in the basement archives of a university museum somewhere. With the global penetration of the internet we now digital reach & interact with people form all over the world. And each one of those people has an opinion, a megaphone and the ability to self publish at the swipe of a smartphone. Fueled by the democratization of the web, we now have too many amplified voices, squeaky wheels, whiners and nutjobs. So how to know what’s genuine and worth paying attention to, and what’s bona fide trash? Curation is the key! Learn about curated lists, curated people and developing your own curation skills.
  • Wikipedia: A curator (from Latin: cura meaning "care") is a manager or overseer. Traditionally, a curator or keeper of a cultural heritage institution (e.g., gallery, museum, library or archive) is a content specialist responsible for an institution's collections and involved with the interpretation of heritage material. The object of a traditional curator's concern necessarily involves tangible objects of some sort, whether it be inter alia artwork, collectibles, historic items or scientific collections. More recently, new kinds of curators are emerging: curators of digital data objects, and biocurators.
  • Now granted, there are literally hundreds if not thousands of examples I could have chosen to highlight today. I ‘hand-selected” the following examples to show you, but afterwards, I’d love to hear your thoughts, feedback and insights on curation that you do, sites or tools you value.
  • Treasury  is an ever-changing, member-curated shopping gallery comprised of lists of items. Lists contain 16 items. Members can feature their favorite items, items selected on a theme or whatever they like. Etsy's staff ("Admin") may promote whole or partial lists to the Handpicked Items featured on Etsy's home page. If you would like your list to be considered for the home page, here are some things to keep in mind: Be diverse! No more than one item per shop. Don't include your own items. Spread the love! Make it beautiful.
  • Create a name & description for your list Drag & Drop from your reviews and create bucket lists of whatever you like. Promote & share your List with Bling
  • This is a design agency’s Tumblr I follow
  • So you all know Foursquare at this point, but do you really care to know every single time someone checks in someplace? I just want the best of the best -- this is where Scoville comes into play. Scoville allows me to curate my previous week’s check-ins and promote & share My Fav Places I select one top check-in and promote it. It goes out on my Twitter & Facebook feeds Of note, a “scoville” is the unit of heat measurement (SHU) that indicates how hot (or piquant) a chili pepper is. Scoville is HOT in my book
  • And certainly curation occurs in the most scholarly of social media websites; Wikipedia. Out of nearly 4 million articles, I rely on the Wikipedia Main Page to serve up the most interesting content http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
  • I do a quarterly “unfriend” to weed out people and LIKES on FB who no longer make sense to me Here are my criteria: we’re either friends IRL or we’ve interacted in the past 90 days. Otherwise, buh-bye
  • - The Klout Score measures influence based on your ability to drive action. Every time you create content or engage you influence others. The Klout Score uses data from social networks in order to measure: -- True Reach: How many people you influence -- Amplification: How much you influence them -- Network Impact: The influence of your network Klout considers me an Activist - Klout Perks are targeted rewards for top influencers in certain categories. EX: recent Roxy Lounge in Scottsdale for new super group “Magnificent 7” consisting of washed up has-beens Free samples: AXE Gift Cards: iTunes, Subway,
  • - Similar to Klout except there’s a serious stock market style gamification component going on
  • Seven Fabulous Browser Extensions: http://web.appstorm.net/roundups/social-media-roundups/7-fabulous-browser-extensions-for-facebook/
  • From global to local, search is being redefined to be as relevant as possible and local ratings & reviews help to curate local content
  • Thoora is a service that helps people find, curate , and publish beautiful, naturally search-friendly, automatically updating content on the web.
  • "Curation is the next iteration of information on the web, and I believe Paper.li has the momentum, passionate publisher base and advanced technology to deliver on the promise of curation and hand-picked content” Eric Hippeau, former CEO Huffington Post, Advisory Board Member, Paper.Li
  • Lastly, if you’re REALLY into “curation” join the Digital Curation Exchange
