Business Education for Life in the Twenty-First Century QUESTIONS THAT WE SHOULD BE ASKING How do we measure impact of development initiatives? How do we stop ourselves from making assumptions? Why do we sheepdip people through “programs”? How can we create an environment where our leaders want to learn and can see the value (personal & business) in it? How do we get talent mindset instilled in managers? Internal vs. external – Why do external consultants get to the CEO and not internal advisors?  External: More often seen as trusted advisor/access to decision makers.  Internal: How can we see ourselves as trusted advisors?  Why can’t internal advisors “package” themselves in the same way as some external advisors?  How can we create a different conversation between internal and external?  How can we be seen/ treated as trusted advisors by Senior Leaders and board?  How can we keep ourselves commercially relevant?  Why have we developed a habit of criticizing ourselves? If you got the space, what are you going to do with it? How to influence strategy?  How to align people and their interests? How to integrate?  How can we create an environment where we can influence strategy?  Short term vs. long term tension – How to balance long term strategy as short term fires?  How do I change the pattern of defining relationships, i.e. when HR is seen as valueless, powerless and unstrategic?  What are the conditions that allow HR/L&D to play a defining role in strategy? How do we enable all stakeholders to establish shared vision (incl. understanding of individual & collective needs, interests and goals)?  How do we shift our stakeholders into a headspace of behavioural change over time using varied intervention (as opposed to training sessions)?  How do we get our stakeholders comfortable with ‘transformational’ approaches to L&D?  How do we balance outcome focus and value add? Are we using the right language in order to influence Business Leaders?  What language do we need to speak?  How do we learn it?  How do we captivate and communicate value? What do we need to shift to more organisations follow the best practice above? How do we utilize the experience of the workforce, including younger generation and older employees – i.e. diversity? We (L&D people and business educators) seem to quickly gravitate to “How do we become relevant?” as a precursor to designing and delivering business education. Have we got it the wrong way around? Do we get the focus on “next-generation business education” so that we become relevant?  How do people work in 21st century? How do they want to be working? How do they want to be learning?  How do you educate across diverse teams? How do or will they learn?  What does university teach students about how they should be learning?  How could we, as a group, influene the way people learn at an earliest stage, i.e: school, uni?  What are the similarities and differences between schools, universities and business in terms of how we learn?  How do the different communities talk to each other?  What are other methods, processes and technology we can be accessing?  How do we broaden the way we problem solve beyond what we know?
