Problem Statement <ul><li>To orientate thinking and to attract the attention of the reader towards the problem being investigated. </li></ul><ul><li>The researcher needs to convince the reader that the topic chosen consists of important problems and solving them will contribute towards knowledge development. </li></ul><ul><li>Needs to highlight briefly the background on what is to be investigated, which has been stated in greater detail in the background of the study (e.g. History, development, current status and problems that exist). </li></ul>

Problem Statement <ul><li>Explain the importance of investigating the problem(s) and the implications, if it is not studied. </li></ul><ul><li>Usually short – about 3 pages. </li></ul><ul><li>May pose questions which are in the mind of the researcher (these are not research questions). </li></ul>

Significance of the Study <ul><li>State clearly why it is important that this research be done. </li></ul><ul><li>Could be looked at from two angles: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>To add knowledge or theory to the body of knowledge in the field </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>To be used by certain individuals and in what way the information may assist the individuals. </li></ul></ul>
