Using the mind to heal the body

 1. 1. Using the Mind to Heal the Body
By Avinoam Lerner, CH
2. 2. The Key Questions:
1: Can our emotions create actual physiological change and disease?
2: And if so, by which means or mechanism might we be able to restore health / balance to our body?
3. 3. Emotions = Reaction
Stress or anxiety – (Shortness of breath, heart palpitation, dizziness)
Intense Fear & Anger – (Frequent urination or diarrhea, sweating, tremors and twitches)
Sadness & Hopelessness – (Fatigue, Insomnia)
Guilt, Shame & Embarrassment – (stomach upset, nausea, blushing, hot flashes)
4. 4. Events Disrupting Good Emotional Health:
Physical signs emotional health is out of balance:
Being laid off / job promotion
A child leave or return home
Death of a loved one
Getting divorced or married
Having a baby
Illness or an injury
Money problems
Moving to a new home
Headaches, sweating, heart palpitation
Back pain /Stiff neck
Constipation or diarrhea
Extreme fatigue
High blood pressure
Insomnia
Upset stomach
Weight gain or loss
How Life Events can Affect You?
5. 5. Getting the Message
Stomach and digestionare your physical assimilation process. Digestive problems occur when you have an inability to 'digest' or absorb what is going on in your environment or inside your head or heart.
Chronic pain: Resentment and bitterness cause inflammation and pain. Stubborn, inflexible resentment goes to the knees and joints--the parts of your body designed to be flexible. Arthritis is bottled-up hurt.
Canceris a deep secret, hatred, guilt, or grief 'eating away' at you. Breast and uterine cancer reveals a lack of nurturing or self-nurturing in your life, or an inability to nurture others.
(Excerpt from Louis Hey – Heal Your Body)
6. 6. The Science of PsychoNeuroImmunology (PNI)
The term Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) was coined by Dr. Robert Ader in 1975.
PNI is the study of the interaction between psychological processes (primarily stress) and thenervous and immune systems of the human body.
PNI = Mind-Body Medicine is an approach to healing that harnesses the power of thoughts, beliefs, and emotions to affect health positively (Cassileth 1998)
7. 7. The Problem with the PNI Approach to Illness
PNI or Mind-body approach may unintentionally create the notion that people are responsible for their illnesses because they lack the proper mental attitude; aside from being scientifically inaccurate, such blame can induce feelings of distress and guilt (Castleman 1996).
Moreover, if this is so, then they should easily be able to change this negative behavior.
8. 8. Bridging Science & Healing
Introducing
“Immersive – Healing”
An advanced Mind-Body modelto healing chronic Illness and cancer, rooted in Immunotherapeutic approach.
9. 9. What is Immunotherapy ?
Immunotherapy is a therapy designed to stimulates, and/or restores the immune-system in people affected by disease through either conventional treatments and/or integrative health care therapies. -Lise Alschuler, ND, & Karolyn Gazella, The Definitive Guide to Cancer
10. 10. The 3 Premises to Immunotherapeutic Approach
Premise # 1:
The body’s natural immune-system is designed to defend against all illnesses, cancer and chronic illness included.
Natural killer cells (or NK cells) are a type of cells that constitute a major component of the innate immune system.
11. 11. The 3 Premises to Immunotherapeutic Approach
Premise # 2:
Harmful states of mind (primarily stress, anger, hopelessness, terror, grief over depravation, guilt, shame, etc’) have shown to effect and suppress the immune system.
Negative emotions, such as anger and cynical hostility, have also been shown to decrease Natural killer cells (or NK cells) activity (Miller et al. 1999) (williams & schneiderman, 2002)
12. 12. The 3 Premises to Immunotherapeutic Approach
Premise # 3:
If these harmful states of mind can be resolved and cleansed, the immune response can be revived and cancer prevented or healed.
(Kiecolt-Glaser and Glaser 1999)
(HOW BIG IS YOUR SACK OF EMOTIONAL PAIN?)
13. 13. Where Does Healing Takes Place?
The Human Mind: a mechanism whose parts are split mostly between two agencies; the conscious and subconscious minds.
The Subconscious Mind: The single most powerful goal achieving agency known to man.
The subconscious is the level at which all running programs of individual nature are accessible for review and edit!
14. 14. The Mind Model
Conscious Mind
Suggestions
& Input
Short Term MemoryWill Power / Analytical& Rational
Subconscious Mind
Critical Factor
Immune System
Emotional/HabitualLiteral & goal achieving
Automatic Bodily Functions
15. 15. Life & Conditioning
The Power of Belief:
External
Internal:
16. 16. Initial Sensitizing Event (ISE)
Illness
Chronic Conditions
Cancer
Events
& Impressions
SSE
SSE
SSE
SSE
ISE
Birth
4 – 6
Chronological Age
ISE: Initial Sensitizing Event (The Root Cause)
SSE: Subsequent Sensitizing Event (Compounding Energy)
17. 17. How Immersive-Healing Differ from Psychotherapy?
Conscious VS Subconscious
External VS Internal
Intellectual VS Experiential
Incubating VS Immediate
18. 18. The Placebo Effect – Our Ally
The Placebo effect is the tendency of any treatment, even an inert or ineffective one, to exhibit results simply because the recipient believes that it will work.
The Nocebo effect is the causation of sickness (or death) by expectations of sickness (or death) and by associated emotional states.
The pivotal understanding in mind-body healing is that you must actually believe enough in the possibility of healing to tell yourself so with conviction.
19. 19. Harnessing the Power of the Placebo Effect
Hypnosis is a heightened state of belief. Hypnosis is the intentional activation of the placebo effect.
This means bypassing your "critical faculty", the conscious mind, and painting a healing picture in your subconscious-mind.
Your subconscious-mind will transmit the imagined outcome via your nervous system to your body which will manifest it in conformance with your thinking.
20. 20. Concluding Remarks
The PNI is a Mind-Body approach which is a truly holistic.

Immersive-Healing is an advanced Mind-Body approach to healing cancer and chronic illness, rooted in PNI. It can be practiced in conjunction with conventional medical treatment.
Talk to your medical practitioner about PNI. Tell them it is primarily about maintaining a healthy lifestyle and healing internal emotional turmoil and conflict such as guilt, shame, fear, depravation and stress.
