  3. 3. <ul><li>Executive Branch’s highest and best-known official is the governor. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Elected every 4 years </li></ul></ul><ul><li>The Constitution does NOT limit the number of terms a governor can serve. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>To run for governor you must be 30 years old and a U.S. citizen. Must have lived in Texas for at least five years immediately before the election. </li></ul></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>Governor manages the state </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Oversees many agencies, boards, and commissions </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Because the constitution limits the power of the governor, Texas is considered to have weak president. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Represents Texas at functions and present awards, as well as proclamations, and as a state leader </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>Budget – every two years the governor submits a proposal to the legislature </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Texas legislature has more power than the governor, however the governor can influence the legislature in several ways by addressing the Congress in the “State of the State” and by calling a special session. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Line-item veto- power to delete specific lines, or parts, of budget bills. This power increases the governor’s influence on how state money is spent. </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>Governor also has responsibilities involving the judicial branch. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Can appoint judges </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Pardon – free people of crimes </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Can also mobilize the National Guard in times of crisis. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Can also declare martial law, putting an area under military control </li></ul></ul>
  7. 7. <ul><li>Lieutenant Governor – serves 4 year term, in charge of the Senate. </li></ul><ul><li>Attorney General – gives governor legal advice and represents Texas in certain court cases. </li></ul><ul><li>Comptroller of Public Accounts – overseas collection of taxes </li></ul><ul><li>Comptroller of Agriculture – enforces agricultural laws </li></ul><ul><li>Commission of the General Land Office – manages land and mineral rights </li></ul>
  8. 8. <ul><li>Branch also has over 200 agencies, boards, and commissions </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Texas Railroad Commission – also regulates oil, natural gas, and mining industries in Texas </li></ul></ul>
  9. 9. Write a paragraph and identifying and explaining which of the governor's powers and duties he or she thinks is the most important.  For homework, imagine you have just completed your first term as Texas governor.  Create a resume describing some of your accomplishments and duties in office and detailing some of your job skills and leadership qualities.
