When Kids Cant Read: What
Teachers Can Do: A Guide for
Teachers 6-12 by Kylene Beers
Eye Opening Book
For Kylene Beers, the question of what to do when kids cant read surfaced
abruptly in 1979 when she began teaching. That year, she discovered that
some of the students in her seventh-grade language arts classes could
pronounce all the words, but couldnt make any sense of the text.
Personal Review: When Kids Cant Read: What Teachers Can
Do: A Guide for Teachers 6-12 by Kylene Beers
This is an amazingly helpful manual for a problem that is affecting so
many of our students. They can decode the words but are unable to make
sense or understand what they are reading so they turn off and say that
reading is boring! I read small sections of this book every day and couldn't
wait to put it into practice. It has worked for English students at Year 7,
Year 8 and Year 9. The Anticipation Guide idea has even been extremely
valuable for a year 10 Literature class. I cannot recommend this book more
highly.
