Vintage Jesus: Timeless Answers to
Timely Questions (Relit Theology) by
Gerry Breshears
Well Written, Well Documented, Have Care With Pre-Teens
This popular-level theology book introduces the person and work of Christ
to those who are seeking answers to some of their most basic-and pivotal-
questions.
Some two thousand years after he walked the earth, Jesus Christ is still
a hot topic. And for all the ridiculous, twisted, Da Vinci Code-esque
conspiracy theories and lies about Jesus that have permeated popular
culture and even the academy over the years, the truth about his
character, nature, and work has not changed. So what exactly is the truth
about Jesus Christ?
Thats the question the authors of Vintage Jesus seek to answer by
breaking it down into a number of sub-questions about Jesus, including Is
Jesus the only God? Why did Jesus come to earth? Did Jesus rise from
death? Why should we worship Jesus? and others. Nonbelievers and new
Christians looking to sit down and delve into the topic of Jesus, asking the
toughest, most confounding questions they can think of, will find solid,
biblical answers presented in a relevant, accessible way.
Personal Review: Vintage Jesus: Timeless Answers to Timely
Questions (Relit Theology) by Gerry Breshears
The first page of the first chapter sets the edged tone for the book. The
author Mark Driscoll does back off a bit for most of the following chapters
but his references to urban cultural euphemisms (such as women in clear
heels) may require more explanation than you want to go into for pre-teens
and below. Parents/Teachers should read in advance to limit
uncomfortable surprise explanations.
Content-wise, the authors dig deep into each question and foot note like
crazy. Whether you agree with their position or not, you're not going to find
any statements or teaching without thorough documentation. Opposing
viewpoints are described, as well, and each topic is extensively dealt with.
I'm a fan of the authors' humor. They are equal opportunity offenders and
leaven each chapter with some light-hearted fun intended to convey
additional meaning.
In conclusion, I loved the book. I've read it through twice and several
chapters more often. As a 36-year old Software Engineer, I appreciate the
challenge in articulating complex theological ideas (that not everyone
agrees with) respectful, timely, and engaging way.
