The Varieties of Scientific
Experience: A Personal View of the
Search for God by Carl Sagan
Carl Sagan, R.I.P.
Carl Sagan’s prophetic vision of the tragic resurgence of fundamentalism
and the hope-filled potential of the next great development in human
spirituality
The late great astronomer and astrophysicist describes his personal
search to understand the nature of the sacred in the vastness of the
cosmos. Exhibiting a breadth of intellect nothing short of astounding,
Sagan presents his views on a wide range of topics, including the
likelihood of intelligent life on other planets, creationism and so-called
intelligent design, and a new concept of science as “informed worship.”
Originally presented at the centennial celebration of the famous Gifford
Lectures in Scotland in 1985 but never published, this book offers a unique
encounter with one of the most remarkable minds of the twentieth century.
Personal Review: The Varieties of Scientific Experience: A
Personal View of the Search for God by Carl Sagan
I had a "That can't be so moment" when I read in the introduction that Carl
died in 1996! where has the time gone. This time dialation effect makes
itself apparent when you realize that when he gave thse lecture he wasn't
privey to the latest discoveries in science that we take for granted now.
This was a great read, illustrating again the skills of the man as an
educator and teacher, making everything seem so understandable and
accessable. Ultimately I don't know if the subject exactly worked, Its
unclear to me how a Scientist can find God, using the Scientific method.
This seems to me be a paradox. If you did find God that way, would it still
be God or just an very interesting scientific explanation? Isn't finding God
through Science actually destroying God?.Isn't 'God" a matter of belief and
not proof. These are the Questions he covers very well, but I am not sure
which of the Gods Sagan actually blieved in. I don't tink this work is not
going to change anyones mind on the sibject of their own belief. But it is
fascentating to see how a first class scientific mind approaches such a
question.I recommend this Book
