I love South Beach. For years, I phoo-phooed it as being "just" another diet book. I figured people would just lose weight and then gain it all back the minute they went off the diet. But then one day I finally had 10 pounds that would NOT come off with my usual trick of eating a bit less and avoiding desserts, and a friend who swore by South Beach. I bought the diet books, started phase 2, and became a convert. I am a carb-o-holic, but this diet make it pretty darn painless to avoid carbs. Furthermore, it is easy to eat/cook on this diet once you learn what to avoid and what you are permitted to have plenty of. It really does become a lifestyle. And while I did gain the weight back again over two years (which is why I purchased this updated book), that is a far cry from gaining it all back in a month. So here I am again, back on South Beach (and already a few pounds lighter), ready to jump-start my life with healthy eating choices and delicious food.
Anyway, this book provides a clear, motivational explanation of why the South Beach Diet (low carbs) is so sound and how it works. Then, for Phase 1 and Phase 2, it provides clear lists regarding permitted and non-permitted foods, two weeks of menus, and recipes for those menus. Finally, it contains great Q&As for both phases.
It also includes an exercise/fitness plan, including inverval walking (basically, alternating between walking fast for so many minutes and then slowly for so many minutes) and some body stretches/workout exercises that reminded me of my Jane Fonda book from years ago (okay did I just date myself?). Personally, I would have preferred more recipes and menus instead of the 60 pages of the fitness program, but I understand why it is part of the book - it makes the diet more effective, and is incredibly important from a general health and fitness perspective.
For those of you who want to just google recipes and do it without the book, that is certainly an option, but I find the book to be extremely motivational and the recipes delicious, such as the Morrocan Lemon Chicken and and Skillet Pork Chops with Sauteed Swiss Chard.
Finally, if you own the first book, you might not need this book, but the permitted/not permitted food lists have been updated, and the recipes/menus are different.
