The Philosophical Baby: What Children?s Minds Tell Us About Truth, Love, and the Meaning of Life by Alison Gopnik - Presentation Transcript

    1. The Philosophical Baby: What Children?s Minds Tell Us About Truth, Love, and the Meaning of Life by Alison Gopnik More Going On Than You Think How do babies think? What is it like to be a baby? How much do our experiences as children shape our adult lives? In the last decade there has been a revolution in our understanding of the minds of infants and young children. We used to believe that babies were irrational, and that their thinking and experience were limited. Now Alison Gopnik—a leading psychologist and philosopher, as well as a mother—explains the cutting- edge scientific and psychological research that has revealed that babies learn more, create more, care more, and experience more than we could ever have imagined. And there is good reason to believe that babies are actually smarter, more thoughtful, and more conscious than adults.
    2. This new science holds answers to some of the deepest and oldest questions about what it means to be human. A new baby’s captivated gaze at her mother’s face lays the foundations for love and morality. A toddler’s unstoppable explorations of his playpen hold the key to scientific discovery. A three-year-old’s wild make-believe explains how we can imagine the future, write novels, and invent new technologies. Alison Gopnik - a leading psychologist and philosopher, as well as a mother - explains the groundbreaking new psychological, neuroscientific, and philosophical developments in our understanding of very young children, transforming our understanding of how babies see the world, and in turn promoting a deeper appreciation for the role of parents. Personal Review: The Philosophical Baby: What Children?s Minds Tell Us About Truth, Love, and the Meaning of Life by Alison Gopnik This book turns some of the things we think we know about babies on their ear. More is going on in their minds than would ever be thought or realized, yet we treat them with kid (no pun intended) gloves. This book reveals there's more going on in their brains than most, if not all, adults. They give much more thought to things than we do in the adult "auto-pilot" mode. Imagination, feeling, connectivity... these are the thing babies really excel at and think about at such a rapid pace. In the end, it's not all the educational toys we surround them with that makes them grow in the real sense. It boils down to taking care of them, being fully aware of them, and loving them. This book also reminds me that reading books, in vast numbers and variety, it one of the best ways to grw our minds. Love your child throughout every precious moment from birth on. I've always been a big believer that reading to your child early and often does wonders for both you and your baby. One early-reader I'd like to recommend is Ladybug Baby Bug.
