The Philokalia, Volume 4: The Complete Text; Compiled by St. Nikodimos of the Holy Mountain & St. Markarios of Corinth - Presentation Transcript

    1. The Philokalia, Volume 4: The Complete Text; Compiled by St. Nikodimos of the Holy Mountain & St. Markarios of Corinth Philokalia - Orthodox Christian's Favorite Book Apart From The Bible. The Philokalia is a collection of texts written between the fourth and the fifteenth centuries by spiritual masters of the Orthodox Christian tradition. First published in Greek in 1782, then translated into Slavonic and later into Russian, The Philokalia has exercised an influence in the recent history of the Orthodox Church far greater than that of any book apart from the Bible. It is concerned with themes of universal importance: how man may develop his inner powers and awake from illusion; how he may overcome fragmentation and achieve spiritual wholeness; how he may attain the life of contemplative stillness and union with God.
    2. Compiled by Bishop Kallistos Ware The fourth volume of The Philokalia Volumes I through III are also available. Personal Review: The Philokalia, Volume 4: The Complete Text; Compiled by St. Nikodimos of the Holy Mountain & St. Markarios of Corinth The Philokalia is a precious gem hidden away from Western eyes for too long. In reading it, I've discovered a world of Christian spiritual wisdom that can't be matched, and which has been largely lost in the tradition I have been raised in. The ascetic and monastic writers in the Orthodox tradition show an unwavering desire to achieve true union with God and the transformation of their lives. This is hard stuff, it will inspire you or make you despair of yourself (maybe both), but if it does, there is always grace from Christ to lift you up. The Philokalia is a guide along the way to salvation. There cannot be a high enough recommendation for a work of this astounding quality and richness. My favourite contributor is Diadochos of Photiki, who provides a good introduction to this way of life.
