Personal Review: The Disorganized Mind: Coaching Your ADHD
Brain to Take Control of Your Time, Tasks, and Talents by Nancy
A. Ratey
I just finished reading The Disorganized Mind and about 3/4 of the book is
now dog-eared.
Technically speaking, I don't have ADD/ADHD; I have a brain injury. My
attention span and working memory are short and unreliable (at best) and
the part of my brain that's in charge of steering me around and getting
things done ("executive functions") no longer does its job. So... practically
speaking, I experience many ADD "symptoms".
I've tried many types of rehab but have seen little improvement in day-to-
day living. This book hit home in so many (MANY!) ways and offered very
clear, workable strategies for taking control of specific issues. I really liked
the book's explaining:doing ratio. The author offers plenty of insight into
why you might be experiencing problem X, without getting bogged down in
the whys of it all. For people with a limited attention span, getting to the
DO-ing part ASAP is mission critical and the book's author clearly
understands that.
For me, the most invaluable part of The Disorganized Mind is the concept
of ADD/ADHD coaching. I don't know how it works for "true" ADD/ADHD-
ers, but I can read great books all day long and as soon as the book closes
- POOF! all that great information is completely lost to me. Never to be
thought of again. But having another person play the part of "spare brain"
(or attention, or whatever) to help guide me through specific strategies has
given me real hope. This is not the only ADD/ADHD book I've read, but it's
the only one I can say that about.
