Personal Review: Spiritual Leadership: Principles of Excellence
for Every Believer by J.Oswald Sanders
Spiritual Leadership, by Oswald Sanders

In some parts of his writings, Sanders methodically approaches by first
placing the corner stone and builds brick by brick the foundational
important fibers of the required essential qualities of a true leadership. In
Chapter 8 he gives the reader seven vitally important biblical tips by putting
first what he called discipline for one who aspires to be a leader. He for
sure did put this discipline decisively first before six of them for he strongly
believed that "Without this essential quality, all other gifts remain as
dwarfs: they cannot grow" (P 52). In his saying he asserts that one who
conquers himself will be able to conquer the world. In Spiritual Leadership,
Sanders tried to communicate with his readers by saying that we can learn
much about leadership as we examine the lives, works, and discipline of
those who have lived and gone before us.
In one of the chapters he distinctly makes a line between good behavior
and the spirit of servanthood. This is the area where many of today's
leaders might easily either get deceived or deceive their members. His
cautiously advices for the leader to look for being filled and led by the Holy
Spirit on a daily basis if an effective work for the kingdom of God is sought.
Sanders' gift in distinguishing whether a leader is born or made while
simultaneously espousing them should not be taken for granted and also
has been made crystal clear. The differences were put in a well mannered
and thoughtful way by simply placing Natural and Spiritual leadership.
Under each one, he puts eight characteristics found in both groups of
leadership. If one looks and contrasts without understanding the writer's
message, the possibility of coming to a wrong conclusion might be at hand
because all characteristics under Natural leadership tends to be carnal.
But he brings the reader to an acknowledgement that even the natural
qualities are super natural gifts, for all the good gifts come from God.
He talks that leadership will be placed in a test. He also points another
great responsibility of leaders producing leaders. Sanders provide both
biblical insights and verses to support his God given agenda to speak in
humble authority. His careful choices of historical figures do fit perfect and
quotations speak live and fresh in regard with his message.
Over all, the book should be read by not only all leaders, but also by all
believers of Jesus Christ, for I believe we all have been called to at least
lead our lives in a way that the Lord has showed and taught us through His
exemplified life.
Pros:
-It's beautifully written especially, for a person whose English is the second
language.
-Excellent and careful choice of quotations and historical figures
-Sticks to the agenda and expresses the idea in the most understandable
way while saving words (word economy).
Cons:
-People whose quotations are taken have been called so many times;
which might lead readers the familiarity of the writer with few ones.
Critique: ***** (5 out of 5 stars)
