Personal Review: Social Studies Activities Kids Cant Resist: 40
Sensational Activities for the Topics You Teach by Geri Harris
I teach fifth grade, and my students had gotten bored with the same social
studies activities. Then I stumbled across this book. This book's activites
teach more than just social studies skills. Math, art and creative writing are
part of a number of these lessons. My students have enjoyed making
historical biography paper dolls. This activity has students make paper
dolls with clothes that would be appropriate for the time in history being
studied. Then they write a brief biography about their doll describing the
doll's daily live experiences.Another popular activity was 'I won!'. Each
student wins an imaginary $10,000 trip for two. Students can choose
where they want to go. Then research how much their trip will cost and
create a budget. With activites like these, I don't dread teaching social
studies any more!
