Psalms for Healing: Praying With
Those in Need by Gretchen Person
Psalms For Healing
Comfort patients, family, and caregivers with the beauty of the Psalms.
When Rev. Person worked as a chaplain in a Mayo hospital, patients
frequently asked her to read psalms and pray with them. The Psalms
contain beautiful, comforting language, but are often surrounded by verses
that are not relevant to healing. Person has created a resource that any
caregiver—chaplain, nurse, hospice worker, pastor, or family member—will
treasure. It is a Psalter, created entirely from the Psalms, but culled in such
a way as to retain only the most helpful verses.
Personal Review: Psalms for Healing: Praying With Those in
Need by Gretchen Person
These words come to mind when I think about the work that Pr. Person
has given to us. As a pastor I have often floundered through the psalms
when doing hospital visits because not every verse is particularly helpful.
Pr. Person has arranged the psalms so that they are in a format that is
easily accessibe to the reader and hearer while still maintaining Biblical
integrity. She has also arranged the psalms in a very helpful schema to
deal with the different situations that a person might face in the hospital
whether it be a sick child, a new diagnosis, confession and forgiveness or
thanksgiving, etc. As a Christian, the psalms have always been a tool
to understanding the life of faith, even (and especially) when life goes in
some unexpected and/or undesired directions. Once again, this book
would be a great introduction and guide to entering into the world of the
psalms. Pr. Person even recomends that it may be used as a devotional
book for families or individuals who are suffering. I highly recomend this
book for all pastors, caregivers and anyone who is suffering or knows
someone who is suffering.
