Miss Manners Guide to
Excruciatingly Correct Behavior,
Freshly Updated by Judith Martin
Great Gift For The Graduate!
Miss Manners down-to-earth collection of wisdom and pithy wit is a joy to
read. Under the chapter on Table Manners, she notes the inevitable
slippage of spaghetti from the fork back onto the plate is Natures way of
controlling human piggishness and suggests a quick motion of the wrist,
such as one uses to shake down a thermometer, will remove excess
ketchup from French fries. From common courtesy and proper attire to the
etiquette of weddings, Martin knows right from wrong and sensible from
rude. But this is no prissy, preachy tome. Miss Manners is very funny and
has impressive insight into life.
Personal Review: Miss Manners Guide to Excruciatingly Correct
Behavior, Freshly Updated by Judith Martin
Miss Manners' gentle exhortations to take the high road without becoming
a doormat with precise instructions on exactly how to accomplish that are
priceless, Everyone can (and should) benefit from her wisdom. Couched
in question and answer format, perhaps a specific problem is not
addressed, but if the Gentle Reader bears in mind the overall philosophy of
maintaining graciousness with dignity and kindness, a solution will present
itself.
I've owned a copy of Excruciatingly Correct Behavior since it first came
out, and am delighted with this updated version. I keep a copy readily at
hand for when life's issues rear their ugly little heads, and can always find
inspiration for dealing with them by leafing through its pages. Knowing
you've done the correct thing is greatly comforting even when other people
don't, and the underlying themes of respect and kindness will stand
everyone in good stead.
This is a wonderful graduation gift, or 'bon voyage' for someone embarking
on a new career, though you might get a quizzical look (are you telling me I
don't have good manners?). As a blueprint for behavior, and an
understanding of why doing the right thing works as opposed to self-
indulgence, it doesn't get any better. What you're actually giving is a leg
up on handling interpersonal relationships and dealing with social,
business and family issues. What better contribution could you make to a
new graduate's life?
