Personal Review: Growing Your Own Vegetables: An
Encyclopedia of Country Living Guide by Lorene Edwards
Forkner
For those of us who aren't actually interested in homesteading and just
want to grow a few of our own vegetables this is a great book to start out
with. The book is well written, informative and to the point. Over the years I
have observed that all together too many gardening books overwhelm the
novice/"ignorant" gardener. This book inspires and directs those of us who
have limited experience with growing vegetables.
Edwards-Forkner and the editors of the new Encyclopedia of Country
Living series should be commended for honoring the legacy of Carla
Emery and giving her work a fresh, approachable new format. For those of
us who do not want the all inclusive, 928 page Encyclopedia and just want
to start growing vegetables ... this is the book.
If I ever want to "manage a herd of cattle" I'll go spend the day with my
neighbor up the road. When we "log our own land" we call the guy with the
logging equipment who has it down to an art form and can get us top dollar
for our lumber.
When I need the necessary information on how to grow our own
vegetables this is the book I'm turning to this spring and summer. And I
am looking forward to book two in the series, due out Fall 2009, Canning
and Preserving Your Own Harvest. I'm kinda hoping that book three will
cover raising chickens.
This is a great book to use and share with your children and grandchildren
as well. Great for use in the city or country by the humble novice ready to
grow vegetables this spring/summer.
