Entertaining And Diverse.
A collection of accessible and excellent short fiction hand-picked by the
countrys most popular writing school.
Each of the stories in Fiction Gallery will hold you spellbound from first to
last page, while also exemplifying the very best in literary fiction. Grouped
in sections that follow the cycle of life, these stories explore the varied
aspects of human existence and, cumulatively, form the satisfying dramatic
arc of a novel.
The authors range from the acknowledged masters of short fiction- Anton
Chekhov, Dorothy Parker, John Cheever, Raymond Carver, T.C. Boyle,
Jhumpa Lahiri- to the very best of todays emerging writers. As a bonus,
the anthology includes interviews with T.C. Boyle and Jhumpa Lahiri, in
which they illuminate the process of creating a short story.
Aspiring writers who enjoyed Gotham Writers Workshop previous book,
Writing Fiction, will also find this anthology an invaluable source of
inspiration and instruction.

school, offering classes in New York City and on the web at

Personal Review: Gotham Writers Workshop Fiction Gallery:
Exceptional Short Stories Selected by New Yorks Acclaimed
Creative Writing School by Thom Didato
Lots of different writers here, from old classics like Hawthorne and
Checkov, to modern classics like Cheever, Frank O'Connor and Carver, to
new guys I never heard of til this book. It's probably tilted somewhat to the
newer writers but that was fine with me. Some of the stand-outs imho, in
no particular order:
Brownies - ZZ Packer
First Confession - Frank O'Connor
Orientation - Daniel Orozco
The Next Building I Plan to Bomb - Charles Baxter.
There were many other worthies but those stood out and the authors were
new to me.
Overall I would say they were going for readable, interesting stories by a
wide range of authors. The book breaks the stories out into life phases -
Starting Out, Longings, Those We Know, The Job, Sunset, and at the end
it has some interviews with a couple of the authors.
Here's hoping they come out with another collection.
