Celtic theology isn't new; it's just been repressed for centuries. But thankfully, because of books written such as this one, it is emerging again. It is definitely a theology for our times, a time when many are speaking of thirsting for more in a spiritual sense, yet no longer wishing to be part of the institutional church; a time when many are hungering for something to 'fill' them after decades of materialism, greed, consumerism left them surrounded by 'things' yet feeling empty within; a time when many are longing for something to allay their fears after the recent finanacial and corporate collapses; a time when many are asking for life directions and wondering 'why do I feel so alone? The Christ of Celtic theology is the one to soothe, heal, inspire, guide and unite all in the circle of humanity. As Newell wrote, "There is a longing within the whole of creation to form a circle again. It is a sacred longing."
It is a circle of divine love, that type of love Jesus spoke of, the love 'we' never really 'got' because it became covered up with too many institutional theologies.
As a result, the earth and seas have been ravaged for we no longer saw them as part of God's creation, we took them for granted and they were ours to conquer. We have also allowed our differences to develop into prejudice, hatred, and wars; we stopped hearing that there is neither Jew, not Greek, etc. Instead we developed odd beliefs such as 'if they weren't like us, they weren't worthwhile', 'if not for us, you're against us'. We have not taken care of ourselves, nor have we loved each other as Jesus commanded. OH, but we've done much manipulating of each other, attempting to outdo each other, putting each other down, and killing each other often 'in the name of God/Jesus the Christ!
The Christ of Celtic theology was repressed because He is of a theology of openness to all, love for all, and somehow maybe due to political/selfish reasons such a theology threatened the institutional church. However, that type of thinking, believing can no longer go on; people are recognizing that within their spirits; they are sensing there is something not quite right in our Christian theologies; there is something missing. They are right. In a world that grows smaller and more volatile each day, we need a God, a Christ that is truly in the midst of all, One whose spirit will open the churches to the fresh air of love and life for all. It's time for doors to open, the walls to come down so the circle will enlarge to include all, and Christ will be in the center again. We will see through all that malarky that was built around him..such as various creeds and doctrines which churches compiled over the centuries, which separated us from each other and from Christ, himself. It's time for the fresh winds of the spirit to stir up ancient truths, and restore the refreshing life giving words of Christ back to us. And then those words will not only touch our spirits, but we will finally understand what Jesus was truly saying, and we will come together despite our differences. We will only see each other as all part of God's creation and we will find ourselves living and acting out those words..as Christ did.
