Childrens Thinking: Cognitive
Development and Individual
Differences (with InfoTrac®) by David
F. Bjorklund
Best Cognitive Development Book
A comprehensive book supported by extensive research studies and data,
Bjorklunds text presents the broadest coverage of topics in cognitive
development. Unlike other books, Bjorklund shows readers how
developmental function can help explain individual differences in cognition
by covering both the typical pattern of change in thinking observed over
time and the individual differences in childrens thinking in infancy and
childhood. A major theme of this book is the continuous transaction
between the child embedded in a social world: although a child is born
prepared to make some sense of the world, his or her mind is also shaped
by forces in the physical and social environment.
Personal Review: Childrens Thinking: Cognitive Development
and Individual Differences (with InfoTrac®) by David F.
Bjorklund
I have used various versions of this textbook since it first came out. The
book has the depth of reasoning and information load needed for a
masters or upper undergraduate course in cognitive development. It
supplies students with a balanced and unbiased coverage of the research,
describing evidence for and against most of the points discussed. My
students, mostly educators coming back for masters or Ph.D. degrees and
who do not have significant background in cognition or development, find it
understandable and pertinent. It is not written for educators exactly, but
they are able to get what they need to from it.
