Many authors put footnotes in their books to provide the reader with additional information.
Most readers appreciate that footnotes answer questions or provide back-story for content on the same page as they are reading.
If you feel that your book can benefit from footnotes, be sure you add them the correct way.
Don’t Do It the Hard Way
Don’t manually type footnote reference numbers.
Margins will change during production, causing your text to shift. Footnotes will no longer be at the bottom of the page like they should be.
This tutorial will show you how to create footnotes the correctly using Microsoft Word.
Creating a Correct Footnote
Position your cursor at the insertion point where you want the reference number to appear.
Go to Insert on your top toolbar. Click Reference and Footnote .
A dialogue box will appear. Be sure Footnote and Bottom of the Page are selected.
You will be given the option to do an endnote . Endnotes appear at the end of your work rather than the bottom of your page. Use an endnote when citing work or providing bibliographical information. Use a footnote to elaborate on content on a specific page.
You can also format your numbering and what number you start at. We recommend Continuous Numbering is selected. This will number your footnotes automatically in chronological order.
Click Insert .
Ready for Publishing
Your formatted footnotes should be ready for the book publisher!
