Compendex®
Compendex® is a journal index, so it is not likely to be approved for
discovery, but we have licensed full-text searching (not display) of
Elsevier's primary publications (e-journals)
LexisNexis
EDS already contains LexisNexis Law Reviews and EBSCO is waiting for
the content provider to send the files for LexisNexis Academic. EBSCO is
seeking all available metadata from the international divisions of

MathSciNet
MathSciNet is a journal index, so it is not likely to be approved for
discovery, but we have licensed full-text searching (not display) of the

SciFinder
SciFinder (Chemical Abstracts) is a journal index and is sold with access
restrictions, so it is unlikely to be approved for discovery access, but we

WSD central index.
Definition: A discovery product consists of an interface directed toward the users of a
library to find materials in its collections and subsequently to gain access to items of
interest through the appropriate mechanisms. Discovery products tend to be
independent from the specific applications that libraries implement to manage
resources, such as integrated library systems, library services platforms, repository
platforms, or electronic resource management systems. In most cases they provide
access to multiple types of materials, independently of the management platform
involved. Discovery products provide an interface with search and retrieval
capabilities, often with features such as relevancy-based ordering of search results,
facets presented that can be selected to narrow results according to specific
categories, contributors, or date ranges, and tools to identify related materials or to
refine search queries. Discovery products will use mechanisms appropriate to location,
content type and license arrangement to provide access to materials. These
mechanisms might include identifying the current location and status of a physical
item with service options to request the item be held or delivered, to provide linking
or direct viewing or download of articles, chapters, e-books, or other textual items
available electronically, and presentation of digital images or multi-media content.
Discovery products may also have social features that enable library patrons to
comment, review, rate, or recommend content items or to interact dynamically with
other patrons. - Marshall Breeding. Library Technology Guides

 • 19. Discovery Layer The user interface and search system for with the content in library systems, such as a 5 Sept 2013 Resource Discovery Services | Athena Hoeppner 19 discovering, displaying, and interacting WSD central index. Definition: A discovery product consists of an interface directed toward the users of a library to find materials in its collections and subsequently to gain access to items of interest through the appropriate mechanisms. Discovery products tend to be independent from the specific applications that libraries implement to manage resources, such as integrated library systems, library services platforms, repository platforms, or electronic resource management systems. In most cases they provide access to multiple types of materials, independently of the management platform involved. Discovery products provide an interface with search and retrieval capabilities, often with features such as relevancy-based ordering of search results, facets presented that can be selected to narrow results according to specific categories, contributors, or date ranges, and tools to identify related materials or to refine search queries. Discovery products will use mechanisms appropriate to location, content type and license arrangement to provide access to materials. These mechanisms might include identifying the current location and status of a physical item with service options to request the item be held or delivered, to provide linking or direct viewing or download of articles, chapters, e-books, or other textual items available electronically, and presentation of digital images or multi-media content. Discovery products may also have social features that enable library patrons to comment, review, rate, or recommend content items or to interact dynamically with other patrons. - Marshall Breeding. Editor's Notes

 1. I’m honored to be here opening this Resource Discovery conference. I look forward to a day full of interesting discussions and insights on the topic. I am a big proponent of Resource Discovery tools and enjoy talking about them with interested librarians. If no interested librarians are available, then I impose upon friends and family, and frankly, they are underwhelmed. When I describe what WSD is they are surprised that we didn’t have this year ago.So I’m glad have this opportunity to dig into the particulars with you today. Though my role is to provide an overview – the blurb, as it were, that the rest of the day will go beyond. What is Web Scale DiscoveryWhat goes into building a Central IndexData SourcesAssimilating recordsCommon Discovery Layer featuresPhilosophy and Choices: Making the WSD Yours Random closing thoughts
 2. This very abbreviated definition covers what I consider to be the two main aspects of a full WSD systemPre-harvested central indexRichly featured discovery layerThe WSD vendors present them as a unified package, but manyalso sell them separately. You can mix and match.Lets take a whirlwind look at the central index and discovery layer.
 3. All the WSD services collect Open access and publisher supplied metadata. I think of this as the core of a central indexAll the WSD services will load your library MARC and digital collections data if you supply it in the accepted formatsAll the WSD services can load searchable full text and database metadata *if* they have agreements to do so.
 4. Discovery Layer:At a minimum, the WSD Discovery LayerSearches across the central indexPresents relevancy-ranked results listUsually includes ILS Integration
 5. There are 4 major offerings that match the definition I use.You will notice I have five services listed…All these vendors offer modern, richly featured discoveryinterfaces, but just four have a large central index of pre-harvested metadataInnovative has a discovery product that is a little different. They are not creating a web-scale central index. Instead they use web services to integrate articles into local library results - sort of as turbo powered custom federated search. Encore Synergy recently partnered with EBSCO to offer EBSCO’s central index as one of the searched sources.WorldCat and EBSCO also have the option to incorporate federated search results into the hits list, even though they do have central indexes, So, Federated Search lives on…
 6. Lots of different data sources are harvested into the central indexOpen Access Metadata and Full Text isharvested by all the WSD services. And constitutes what I think of as the core.Metadata about ejournals and ebooks, and, frequently, the full text is indexed and searchableThe data from publishers usually gives basic citations and may include author abstracts and keywordsMARC and otherLocal Collections data is optionally (and usually) provided by the libraryMetadata from A/I and informational databases may be harvested BUT can be searched and/or viewed only if library has a subscription - Mutually Licensed ContentDatabase vendors may have negotiated different deals with each WSD to supply different dataThe exact deals between WSD vendors and other vendors not uniform and change Some of the database vendors are also WSD competitors. Surprisingly, they don’t share and share alike. Some database vendors do not supply any metadata to any of the WSD services, particularly specialized vendors, like SciFinder Scholar or Valueline, or strictly A/I databases with no affiliation with WSD vendors, like MathSciNet.Next generation Federation and/or database recommenders can help get users to the “missing” content (EHIS EBSCOhost Integrated Search)Deals are worked out weekly – more content is getting into the Central Indexes all the time. Follow Marshall Breeding’s Library Technology to keep up – or just ask the WSD vendor
 7. WSD vendors can provide you with information about the data sources loaded into their central index. This is a sample from the EDS Data Partners spreadsheet that EBSCO sends to customers every few months. It contains useful details and I hope the other WSD vendors send a similar sheet.A close look reveals some limitations and complexities of central indexes.
 8. EDS explicitly tags the open access sources in their Data Partners sheet.Load process and protocols: Even if content is open, the complete metadata and full text are not guaranteed. The metadata load will depend on the harvester protocols. Of course the harvesting process and protocols can affect any of the data providers.Partial content: Full text or other may be unavailable or delayed for technical reasons.
 9. Three commercial journal and book publishers.Backfiles – many publishers send all their back content, some do not. Metadata - Searchable metadata may vary. ACS sends keywords, subjects, and abstracts – not searchable full text . AMS sends subjects and searchable full text, but no abstract.“Everything provided by the publisher” is vague - may not be the same as everything the publisher publishes, nor all the metadata about what the publisher publishes.Note that searchable Full Text does not mean access to the full text is providedStatus – The load may be a work in progress. Some content types or years may be loaded, while others are in the queue. The exact deals between WSD vendors and publishers may vary, so these descriptions may not match the loads for Summon, WorldCat, or Primo.
 10. Mutually licensed: content will be indexed and searchable, but not viewable unless the library has a license (subscription)ARTstor and IBISWorld are similar to the full text publishers. The central index helps users find their content – Images or company reports.MLA and other A/Is have more of a concern – they need to protect their revenue.
 11. All the data is available for mutual subscribers, but lacks meaningful functionality.
 12. Some data sources are desired but unavailableMany Indexes do not contribute dataSome other sources are difficult to get for one reason or another, or may not align well with WSD inclusion
 13. “The content that a library owns or subscribes to should be discoverable in the way librarians want.”Discovering Reciprocity By Michael Kelley on Library Journal. April 16, 2013http://lj.libraryjournal.com/2013/04/opinion/editorial/discovering-reciprocity/In fact, we’ve been dealing with platform exclusives or limited options all along. WSD bring us so much closer to achieving the ideal than any service to this point.Who is to blame?
 14. Of course, the index is not static.EBSCO sends new content announcements.Maintaining the index was not as straight forward as I expected. Originally EDS automatically added and turned on for searching all new data sources. So, records from sets like the Harvard Bibliographic Records would suddenly flood into user search results. After a torrent of librarian feed-back, EDS added new functionality to EBSCOadmin so libraries control whether new items are “on” by default. They also upped their game by providing detailed new-content emails. (see example)I assume some similar process must go on for the other WSD services.
 15. The Central Index gets metadata from different sources – the same item may be described several times in different recordsFor example, an article may have metadata supplied fromSpinger (the copyright owner), Ingenta, Compendex, Gale OneFile, An Institutional repositoryAnd moreObviously, you don’t want the same item listed multiple times in the results list, so some decisions and processing and must be appliedRecords for an item are matchedMetadata is mapped to the vendor’s preferred record format – MARC, EBSCO, SummonFind the entire group for any query words in the group. Basic approaches to putting the metadata togetherClustered Records – records are associated together, and either the most complete or the publishers version of the record is displayedComposite – all the metadata is mapped into a single merged record.Blended Data - additional metadata, available from a mutually licensed source, is merged into the display.
 16. In both approaches duplicates are identifiedBlended / compositeDo vendors have the rights to modify the A/I records? – duplicates identified and a single Whether the system creates a blended record of some sort or clusters mustMerge and dedupClustered records - a search will find the words from any of the records in the group. The record deemed best by the WSD vendor is shown. The “best” may be the one with the most metadata, the one associated with hosted full text, or the one provided by the publisher. EBSCO only merges data from EBSCO owned content.
 17. Some of the vendors put full lists of publishers, databases, and journals on their sites, with details about year of A/I and full text coverage. You can get a sense of how well the Central Index fits your collection a few different ways:Send a list of journals (usually an export from your OpenURL Resolver) and the WSD vendor will report the coverage overlap.Send a list of databases and ask the vendor what the includeAsk the database vendor if they are included in any WSD service. If they say no, ask them to consider being included
 18. User interface features (search options, facets and other controls) branding, widgets, enhancements available – in general. Relevancy RankingWidgetsIntegration of external services (OpenURL, LMS, etc.)
 19. There are many more Discovery Layer vendors than Central Index vendorsIn addition to the commercial vendors, there are open source and home-grown discovery products. i.e. MangoAPIs and other things I know little about make it possible to mix and match central indexes and discovery layers.
 20. Universities are the most prevalent adoptersThe listed universities all have implementations that allow guest searching. They also seem to have close to out-of-the-box implementationsCommonalities will emerge.Let’s take a look at examples from the first row.

 34. The list of features is quite lengthy – the discovery services are really rich!A check list of every interface features will not reveal if the discovery layer will work well with your content and users. There may be functions that may have no significance. Prioritize the features that you want. There are important aspects that you can’t see from screen shots.
 35. Users typically don’t use all those nice tools I just covered. Users enter 1-3 search terms, then pick results from the first few screens. Relevancy ranking controls which of the hits users will see and use.Relevancy is extremely important and hard to pin down. The central index is a BIG pile of hay. The search and refinement tools are rakesThe relevancy ranking is a magnet.
 36. Decide which features are important to your library and usersConsider whether the strong points align well with how you envision your WSD serving your population searching your collection.Decide if you have the resources and want to use APIs for further customizationsTry out existing implementations
 37. Philosophy and intended use matterIdeally, everyone should have the same idea of what to do and whyHave a philosophy. Know what you want to do with the servicePick the central index that aligns with your content and has the metadata to support discovery of the content you wish to promote Pick a discovery layer that can surface the content your users want to find and that facilitates search behavior you want to promote.
 38. I don’t have a set of comprehensive criteria for evaluating WSDs. I previously mentioned some thoughts for evaluating the central index and discovery layer. There is much more to consider IMO, the big three BIG considerations are:Content / Central Index: Does the index sufficiently cover the content you own or want your researchers to use?Detail and breadth of A/I contentRecord processing/dedupping and primary record displayRelevance to Library needs and collectionYears and breadth of full text indexingInterface: Does the interface align with user capabilities and expectations. Does the relevancy algorithm surface the material your researchers want to find, and that the library wants to promote? Can you modify the interface to make it do what you want, where you want? Search/Discovery ToolsEnd-User Features and ControlsInterface customizationsResults EnrichmentExternal Searching, linksILS IntegrationBusiness/Back-endHow involved are the installation, updating, and maintenance processes, and do you have the hardware and staff required? Some WSD services are more turn-key. Does the WSD service work well with your existing access-enhancement services, such as OpenURL, ERM, A-Z list?Business relationshipsPrice/Pricing ModelUse of vendor's related productsBack-endAdmin Module and ControlsHosted or LocalUsage statisticsHarvesting and maintenance processes
 39. There are many articles about assessing. Search stats may become useless. Sessions, abstract views, Libraries report dramatic increases in full text use. Some report increased ILL use. Does Discovery systems increase use of appropriate FT?Bibliometrics – Does the discovery service include the content? Does it surface the content? (Discuss a study of WSD Content and User Satisfaction)Are users Satisfied with the discovery experience?Relevancy ranking results can be inconsistent if notLack of advanced search features Worry that some important material is missed out in the index or in some disciplines totally inadequate. Related is the view that a subject specific database is almost always better e.g. PubMed.Worry that users are unaware that they are missing out material not found in the index, and they may settle for good enough instead of the best availableWorry that discovery services are damaging information literacy skills by misleading users into thinking research is easyTechnical issues relating to instability of linking to full-text, clarity of labels in the interface etcUncertainty on how to position discovery systems next to databases and how to teachWorry that libraries are handing over too much power to discovery services due to lock-in by discovery service providers who are simultaneously content providers (example of recent dispute). From 8 things we know about web scale discovery systems in 2013 by Aaron Tay
 40. We should be able to tell what is and isn’t in the central index. IMO, that also means we should be able to see all the data sources and the original record for each item.We need a clear vocabulary and standards for harvesting that publishers, vendors, and libraries agree on and can work toward. We should support Open Discovery systems. There are already open discovery layers. If NISO develops a common standard for delivering metadata, then libraries can harvest the data and create their own basic indexes.NISO has projects relating to points one and two and I hope to see good direction from them in the near future.Open access content is increasingly important, - grant funding requirements, movement to put scholarly discussions on social sites (blogs, Academia.edu, etc). MOOCs.Altmetrics, means to select open web content. Identify which items are openWSD are BIG silos. They still require our users to come to our sites, log in to access content, and do many other things that are different from…Course ware and LTIsLibGuidesFacebookMobile interfacesWorldCat emphasizes that they can pull users in from Google because WorldCat union index is crawled by Google. I wonder if they have stats to back that up.
 41. My time is up. Thank you for your attention. Now, I look forward to the panels 1: Selection and implementation,2: Academic services issues: effect on user support, enquiries, information literacy skills teaching.3: Technical services issues: metadata, FRBR & RDA, enrichment, full-text indexing, interoperability with LMS, ERM and link resolver.4: Assessment and statistics: use of the discovery service and impact on usage of databases, full text e-resources, loans, inter-library loans5: Management and strategic issues:
 42. From: Laurence Lockton [mailto:L.G.Lockton@bath.ac.uk] Hello Athena,Thank you very much for offering to contribute as a panellist. If you would be able to obtain the funding to travel and stay in England (I'm afraid we have no means to fund it), we'd love to have a view from the States. I remember reading your article in Computers in Libraries, and can see that the work you've done since implementing EBSCO DS would be very interesting to attendees to the conference. We hope to make the conference as much an open forum as possible, hence the idea of having a series of panel sessions rather than presentations. But we think it would be nice to have an opening keynote to introduce the topic in general, perhaps explaining the terminology and outlining the solutions available, and a closing keynote that looks to the future: the development of discovery services themselves or their relationship to emerging library services platforms, for example. We wondered whether you would be willing to present either of those, and if so an outline of what you would propose to speak about? If you would like to be on a panel as well, or instead, we would ask you to speak for a few (no more than five) minutes to introduce yourself and your library, and make a couple of points about your experiences with discovery services, as if answering questions given in advance. No slides please, unless you want to show one or two screenshots or graphics to illustrate a point. To give you an idea of the scope of each session, below are some questions you might like to answer during your introduction. Then please be prepared, as best you can, to answer questions like these from the floor. Please let me know which panel you would like to participate on, and if you have any other suggestions for topics to discuss.Kind regards,Laurence LocktonUniversity of BathUK+44 (0)1225 386888Panel session 1: Selection and implementation, comparison of functionality and central index coverageWhat was the library was aiming to achieve in purchasing a discovery service? For example: single search of all resource types to reduce number of places to searchprovide search results only from library collections to maximise their use or better satisfy users' requirements for immediacyprovide broadest possible search to compete with Google Scholar, etc.improve access to, or increase use of a particular part of the collection, e.g. e-resources because of a shift of spendingsearch interface more like a web search engine, with faceted results, etc.replace the OPAC with prettier interfacereplace the OPAC to get better relevance of resultsreplace a federated search systemreplace another discovery service that hadn't met expectationsspend money that needed spendingkeep up with other librariesWhat market research did you do?What did you feel were the critical differences between the available products? How well did the selected discovery service selected fit the requirements? Was the coverage of the central index, or the inclusion of certain databases, a factor? Was keeping federated search capability a factor? Were there other factors in the decision, such as cost, integration with existing systems, existing vendor relationship, membership of a consortium?Panel session 2: Academic services issues: effect on user support, enquiries, information literacy skills teachingHas the discovery service changed the way you do library inductions or teach information literacy?Has it changed the nature of enquiries?Has it improved known item searching or other difficulties with a previous service?Have you conducted any surveys, focus groups, collected feedback, etc. and what have you found out about the impact of the discovery service on students or other groups of users? How clear do you feel your users are about what the discovery service does? How have academic staff received it?Panel session 3: Technical services issues: metadata, FRBR & RDA, enrichment, full-text indexing, interoperability with LMS, ERM and link resolverDid you have to do anything to your local records to get them to load into the discovery service, e.g. convert to MARC21, remove journal subititles, edit the MARC record leader? What sources of records are used e.g. are records for e-books and e-journals still maintained in the library management system and exported to the discovery service, or are you using records in the central index or link resolver knowledgebase? Are records from other local data sources included? If you've hidden the old OPAC from public view, how well does the discovery service work as a replacement? Or if you haven't hidden the old OPAC, why not?Are records from different sources de-duplicated and "FRBRized" and if so how well does that work?Have you had to do anything to adjust for RDA, e.g. to index publication date in 264? Does the discovery service do anything with the 33x fields? Are there any issues with interoperability between the discovery service and the link resolver, library management system, e-resource management system, EZproxy, etc?Does the discovery service match records for books, including print holdings, with catalogue record enrichment data or full text of digitised books in the central index? Has this made a noticeable difference to their retrieval?Panel session 4: Assessment and statistics: use of the discovery service and impact on usage of databases, full text e-resources, loans, inter-library loansHave you looked at statistics generated by the discovery service at all, and obtained any useful or interesting information from them?Have you assessed it in other ways: user testing, focus groups, collating feedback?Have you acted on the information you've obtained, e.g spending on resources, staffing, user interface features?Has anything come out of student satisfaction surveys or similar?Has it had an effect on the use of resources and services, e.g. databases searches, full text downloads, loans, inter-library loans, electronic course reserves / scans under the CLA licence. Has it effected key performance indicators?Have you tried to assess the value for money of the discovery service itself?Panel session 5: Management and strategic issues: costs, effect on staff time and roles, effectiveness of supplierHave staff had to have training to support the system e.g. change to cataloguing practices because the system uses the records differently or has exposed problems with them?Did changes brought about by the implementation of the discovery service have to be managed? Has there been resistance from library staff, e.g. recommending against its use? Are all library staff clear on the purposes of implementing the discovery service?Have staff roles or responsibilities changed naturally, or had to be changed formally? Has the discovery service enhanced the reputation of the library with the senior staff or academic staff of the institution?Which staff are involved with the support and development of the service internally? Have you had to put more time and expertise into making the discovery service work than expected? Or has it released staff to do other things?Have you done any configuration or customisation you're particularly pleased with?Who liaises with the vendor? Are you happy with the support and development from the vendor? On 08/07/2013 19:00, Richard Taylor wrote: ---------- Forwarded message ----------From: Athena HoeppnerDate: Monday, 8 July 2013Subject: Resource Discovery Services conference - Thurs 5th September - BathTo: "r.taylor@bathspa.ac.uk" <r.taylor@bathspa.ac.uk>Hello Richard, I skimmed the conference program with interest. I think I may have some insights to contribute as a panelist. Would a view from the States interest attendees? I was a key member of the WSD selection and implementation team here at the University of Central Florida. We implemented EBSCO Discovery System in July 2012 and I’ve since run user satisfaction surveys, an analysis of nursing graduate papers, and reviewed our usage stats. I continue to lead content and implementation reviews and troubleshoot problems as they arise. Please contact me if my perspective may be useful for the panels. Best wishes,Athena Athena HoeppnerElectronic Resources LibrarianUniversity of Central Florida Librariesathena@ucf.edu | 407-823-5049 From: EBSCO Discovery Service Partners [mailto:EDS_PARTNERS@EBSCOHOST.COM] On Behalf Of Richard TaylorSent: Monday, July 08, 2013 5:16 AMTo:EDS_PARTNERS@EBSCOHOST.COMSubject: [EDS_PARTNERS] Resource Discovery Services conference - Thurs 5th September - BathImportance: Low Hello,Join us at the University of Bath for a one day conference on Thursday 5th September 2013, as we look beyond the sales pitches to the realities of resource discovery services."Resource Discovery Services - Beyond the Blurb"This conference will provide a forum for staff from libraries which have implemented an index-based discovery service to exchange experiences, as well as being of interest to staff from libraries that have not yet selected a resource discovery product. The conference will feature five panel sessions, each focussing on a different aspect of resource discovery services and how they impact on library service delivery. Panellists will come from libraries using a range of products (principally EBSCO Discovery Service, Primo and Summon.) The differences between the products will be explored, as well as the approaches taken by different libraries in selecting and implementing the service. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions during the sessions, and to continue discussion during breaks and afterwards. The fee is £50 excl VAT per person, which includes a two course lunch and refreshments throughout the day.See the draft programme and book now at:http://www.bath.ac.uk/library/resource-discovery/If you would be interested in participating on a panel, please get in touch. You do not need to consider yourself to be an expert. We're looking for real experiences, good and bad. We will give you some questions in advance, so you have time to consult with your colleagues and prepare to speak for a few minutes, then participate in an open and informal discussion of the issues.Regards,Richard TaylorBath Spa University################################################################################# * To unsubscribe from this list send an empty message to: EDS_PARTNERS-unsubscribe-request@EBSCOHOST.COM* For further questions contact: EDS_PARTNERS-request@EBSCOHOST.COM -- Richard TaylorDeputy Director of Library & Information ServicesBath Spa UniversityT: +44 (0)1225 875476 Visit www.bathspa.ac.ukJoin us on: Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | LinkedInNewton Park, Bath, BA2 9BNThink before you printDisclaimerIf you have received this message in error, please notify us and remove it from your system.
