Definition: A discovery product consists of an interface directed toward the users of a library to find materials in its collections and subsequently to gain access to items of interest through the appropriate mechanisms. Discovery products tend to be independent from the specific applications that libraries implement to manage resources, such as integrated library systems, library services platforms, repository platforms, or electronic resource management systems. In most cases they provide access to multiple types of materials, independently of the management platform involved. Discovery products provide an interface with search and retrieval capabilities, often with features such as relevancy-based ordering of search results, facets presented that can be selected to narrow results according to specific categories, contributors, or date ranges, and tools to identify related materials or to refine search queries. Discovery products will use mechanisms appropriate to location, content type and license arrangement to provide access to materials. These mechanisms might include identifying the current location and status of a physical item with service options to request the item be held or delivered, to provide linking or direct viewing or download of articles, chapters, e-books, or other textual items available electronically, and presentation of digital images or multi-media content. - I’m honored to be here opening this Resource Discovery conference. I look forward to a day full of interesting discussions and insights on the topic. I am a big proponent of Resource Discovery tools and enjoy talking about them with interested librarians. If no interested librarians are available, then I impose upon friends and family, and frankly, they are underwhelmed. When I describe what WSD is they are surprised that we didn’t have this year ago.So I’m glad have this opportunity to dig into the particulars with you today. - This very abbreviated definition covers what I consider to be the two main aspects of a full WSD systemPre-harvested central indexRichly featured discovery layerThe WSD vendors present them as a unified package, but manyalso sell them separately. You can mix and match.Lets take a whirlwind look at the central index and discovery layer.
- All the WSD services collect Open access and publisher supplied metadata. I think of this as the core of a central indexAll the WSD services will load your library MARC and digital collections data if you supply it in the accepted formatsAll the WSD services can load searchable full text and database metadata *if* they have agreements to do so.
- Discovery Layer:At a minimum, the WSD Discovery LayerSearches across the central indexPresents relevancy-ranked results listUsually includes ILS Integration
- There are 4 major offerings that match the definition I use.You will notice I have five services listed…All these vendors offer modern, richly featured discoveryinterfaces, but just four have a large central index of pre-harvested metadataInnovative has a discovery product that is a little different. They are not creating a web-scale central index. Instead they use web services to integrate articles into local library results - sort of as turbo powered custom federated search. Encore Synergy recently partnered with EBSCO to offer EBSCO’s central index as one of the searched sources.WorldCat and EBSCO also have the option to incorporate federated search results into the hits list, even though they do have central indexes, So, Federated Search lives on…
- Lots of different data sources are harvested into the central indexOpen Access Metadata and Full Text isharvested by all the WSD services. - Of course, the index is not static.EBSCO sends new content announcements.Maintaining the index was not as straight forward as I expected. Originally EDS automatically added and turned on for searching all new data sources. So, records from sets like the Harvard Bibliographic Records would suddenly flood into user search results.After a torrent of librarian feed-back, EDS added new functionality to EBSCOadmin so libraries control whether new items are “on” by default. They also upped their game by providing detailed new-content emails. (see example)I assume some similar process must go on for the other WSD services.

- There are many articles about assessing. Search stats may become useless. Sessions, abstract views, Libraries report dramatic increases in full text use. Some report increased ILL use. Does Discovery systems increase use of appropriate FT?Bibliometrics – Does the discovery service include the content? Does it surface the content? (Discuss a study of WSD Content and User Satisfaction)Are users Satisfied with the discovery experience?Relevancy ranking results can be inconsistent if notLack of advanced search features Worry that some important material is missed out in the index or in some disciplines totally inadequate. - We should be able to tell what is and isn’t in the central index. IMO, that also means we should be able to see all the data sources and the original record for each item.We need a clear vocabulary and standards for harvesting that publishers, vendors, and libraries agree on and can work toward. We should support Open Discovery systems. There are already open discovery layers. If NISO develops a common standard for delivering metadata, then libraries can harvest the data and create their own basic indexes.NISO has projects relating to points one and two and I hope to see good direction from them in the near future.Open access content is increasingly important, - grant funding requirements, movement to put scholarly discussions on social sites (blogs, Academia.edu, etc).
