  1. 1. Lacrosse: from one position to another Allison Strecker
  2. 2. Content preview Before: Fitting in is acceptable, right?  Changing lacrosse positions, or changing personal positions?  I am who I am. 
  3. 3. “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” ~ Dr. Suess
  4. 4. Just fit in I used to be so self conscious that I would do anything to fit in.  I just sat back and stayed quiet.  I never spoke my mind, aka people pleaser. 
  5. 5. is my motivation Being on a team helped me gain perspective.  The game itself paved a way for my success.  I still didn’t feel comfortable enough to speak up or even suggest anything. I only went along with everything to avoid being humiliated or judged.
  6. 6. Why didn’t I voice my opinion? I would think the older girls would get the idea that I thought I was better than them.  I was too nervous to be wrong and impress people.  I let my coach switch my position.. 
  7. 7. Lacrosse position… My coach wanted to test me at a different position during an important game.  I knew it was in my best interest to no question the idea. 
  8. 8. Defense? No one ever liked being on that end of the field.  Why would my coach want me down there, was I not talented enough?  Little did I know how big of a difference I made in one game. 
  9. 9. What wins championships?! My coaches were so encouraging throughout it all.  Because of their knowledge, we worked together.  They saw the potential in me to lead a strong defensive end.  After all, defense wins championships. 
  10. 10. How I began to grow: After I saw how well I played at defense, I had a new found sense of confidence.  I began to realize how important my position was.  The more I was encouraged, the more I stood out.  I ended that season as defensive player of the year… 
  11. 11. Confidence Confidence led me to understand that it’s okay to try new things.  Slowly but surely I became a role model to the girls on my team.  I learned to use constructive criticism to benefit my team.  Suddenly I wasn’t just a listener, I was the one they listened to. 
  12. 12. I am who I am Through lacrosse, I learned that who I am is more important than what I want others to THINK I am.  My coaches gave me that extra boost to challenge myself. 
  13. 13. From now on: Now I am more me than I thought was possible.  I am flat out blunt with people.  My confidence has a way of showing people that I’m not afraid of anything.  I think I anyone can be as easy going as a heifer, but as dominant as a bull.  I know that no matter what I do, I do it as me. 
