  5. 5. MicroStrategy Offers Specific Benefits in Integrating with Database Platforms Query Faster Generate Database-Specific SQL Give the DBA Detailed Levels of Control with Control the Details Hundreds of VLDB Settings Move the Least Push-Down Analytics and Functions Amount of Data Architect Intelligently MicroStrategy is Aggregate Aware 5 CONFIDENTIAL The Information Contained In This Presentation Is Confidential And Proprietary To MicroStrategy. Reproduction or Distribution Is Prohibited.
  6. 6. DB-specific SQL Generation MicroStrategy Generates SQL specific to the database being accessed, even if multiple sources are being queried • Syntax is optimized for each database platform • Common syntax patterns are abstracted so that they can vary by RDBMS (e.g., Create Temp Table Pattern = “create temp table #0#1 with no log #2”) MicroStrategy SQL Engine DB-Optimized DB-Optimized DB-Optimized DB-Optimized Query Query Query Query Data Operational Data Departmental Warehouse Databases Warehouse Databases 6 CONFIDENTIAL The Information Contained In This Presentation Is Confidential And Proprietary To MicroStrategy. The Recipient Of This Document Agrees That They Will Not Disclose Its Contents To Any Third Party Or Otherwise Use This Presentation For Any Purpose Other Than An Evaluation Of MicroStrategy's Business Or Its Offerings. Reproduction or Distribution Is Prohibited.
  7. 7. Hundreds of VLDB Settings There are more than 100 VLDB Settings and Properties Available to the User • Key Categories of Settings include: 1. Query Optimizations 2. SQL Pass Optimizations (Multi-pass and Single-pass Optimizations) 3. Calculation Optimizations 4. Join Optimizations 5. Indexing Optimizations • Many are for backwards compatibility when SQL generation changes • Some change semantics; some change only syntax • Some affect result data; some affect only query performance • Some do not affect SQL generation at all • A few apply only to specific database platforms 7 CONFIDENTIAL The Information Contained In This Presentation Is Confidential And Proprietary To MicroStrategy. The Recipient Of This Document Agrees That They Will Not Disclose Its Contents To Any Third Party Or Otherwise Use This Presentation For Any Purpose Other Than An Evaluation Of MicroStrategy's Business Or Its Offerings. 8. 8. Optimized Push-down Analytics MicroStrategy has a Huge Internal Analytics Library, but will push down Calculations to the DB when Possible • MicroStrategy Provides an Un-matched Library of Analytics OOTB, including: • 40+ Basic Mathematical Functions & Operators (e.g., Sum, Avg, etc.) • 20+ Date & Time Functions (e.g., “DayofYear”) • 50+ Financial Functions (e.g., NPV, IRR, etc.) • 20+ Advanced Predictive Algorithms (e.g., Linear Regression, Tree Regression, Neural Networks, etc.) • And Hundreds of others… • MicroStrategy also Provides the Ability to Define Any Custom Functions • But to make best use of the DB power, MicroStrategy will push down analytics as much as possible to the DB to perform calculations, joins, aggregations, etc • This ensures that the LEAST amount of data is moved from the DB to the BI layer 8 CONFIDENTIAL The Information Contained In This Presentation Is Confidential And Proprietary To MicroStrategy. 9. 9. Aggregate Awareness MicroStrategy provides the ability to detect and automatically use aggregate tables in the data warehouse. • MicroStrategy calculates the “size” of every table as it is added to the metadata or model. • The “size” is an integer number that represents the granularity or level of aggregation of a particular table. It is not related to the physical size of the tables (number of rows). • It is calculated according to the attributes that are present in the table and their position in their respective hierarchies. The higher the attribute level smaller is its contribution to the logical table size. • Based on this “size”, the MicroStrategy SQL Engine intelligently sources the query to the table that will return the accurate results the fastest, using the least resources and passes of SQL 9 CONFIDENTIAL The Information Contained In This Presentation Is Confidential And Proprietary To MicroStrategy. 10. 10. Specific MicroStrategy Optimizations for Aster Data • Aster Data nCluster-specific SQL syntax – RANK function – OLAP functions – Full outer joins – Use of CASE expressions • Multi-pass SQL for analytical sophistication – Partition key on intermediate tables – SELECT INTO syntax for speed • Extensions to Aster Data nCluster functionality – Aggregate awareness with physical summary tables – Middle-tier caching via Intelligent Cubes – Report caching • Seamless support for key Aster Data nCluster features – Aster Data nCluster function library – Can create views based on SQL-MapReduce and query from MicroStrategy – Working integration with Aster Data SQL-MapReduce functions like nPath 10 CONFIDENTIAL The Information Contained In This Presentation Is Confidential And Proprietary To MicroStrategy.
