1. 1. APPLICATION OF GREENSTONE (OSS) IN DIGITIZATION OF SOCIAL SCIENCE LIBRARIES IN INDIA By Mr. Jitendra Barik Asst. Librarian, Institute of Management and Information Science, Bhubaneswar, Orissa, E-mail: & Mr. Ashok Kumar Satapathy Asst. Librarian, Institute of Management and Information science, Bhubaneswar, Orissa, E-mail: hosted by @ Ashok Kumar Satapathy
 2. 2.

INTRODUCTION

Concept & Need of Digitalization

Social Science Libraries & Digitization

What is Open Source Software

The Importance of Open Source Software

Why Greenstone (OSS)

Greenstone Fact Sheet

Greenstone Communities

Training and Development (T.D.)

2
 3. 3.

Concept & Need of Digitization

‘ Digitization ’ is a modern method for preservation of digital contents. Looking at the present day requirement we have to adopt a smart system for knowledge management. Preferably, in present day we have good numbers of Open Source Software (OSS) available for Knowledge Digitization.

Digitization as well as preservation of documents is as important as the acquisition, access, and retrieval of information in a Integrated Library System (ILS).

In this contemporary environment we need “any where, any time ” information access to the best and up-dated information services in the society. In other words, we need the concept of 24 X 7 X 365 knowledge management.

3
 4. 4.

Social Science Libraries & Digitization

Overall development of the human endeavour in the society, in the field of cultural, social, political, economical activities of Government, trade, industry, and social (community) interaction now take place in a very complex environment, in this situation recorded knowledge intensifying his area in social science as well. To face the situation we need preservation of digital information for future necessity.

Lets take an example: V. V. Giri National Labour Institute & Association of Indian Labour Historians, Delhi, using GSDL (OSS) for digitization, preservation and dissemination of relevant information socially. More details available at: http://

4
 5. 5.

What is Open Source Software

According to Raymond (2000) the definition of OSS is “software that is freely redistributable and can readily be evolved and modified to fit changing needs”.

Tradition of OSS is:

Open Standard

Shared Source Code

Collective Development Through Community

5
 6. 6. Importance of OSS

Anybody can access, because of free mentality & development is possible through its OSS community.

Non-programmers can be part of OSS movement:

Testing

Reporting bugs

Suggesting improvements

Contributing to community

Contd…

6
 7. 7. Importance of OSS

Install any number of copies

No legal & audit hassles

No product activation key

No annual cost

OSS Benefits:

No monopolies

No piracy paranoia

New versions are made available to all as soon as it is release. Programmers all over the world work on the software simultaneously.

7
 8. 8. Why Greenstone (OSS)

It is available through General Public Licence (GNU).

Access and distribution on OPAC & CD-ROM.

Multiplatform Unix, Windows, Solaris, etc.

It is multilingual.

Online & Off-line training support.

Greater E-mail support.

Powerful Index and Browsing, etc.

Its developers received the 2004 IFIP Namur award for “contributions to the awareness of social implications of IT, and the need for holistic approach in the use of IT that takes accounts of social implications”.

8
 9. 9. Greenstone Fact Sheet

Greenstone is a suitable open source software for building and distributing digital library collections. It is not a digital library but a tool for building digital libraries. It provides a new way of organizing information and publishing it on the Internet & Intranet in the form of a fully searchable, metadata-driven digital library.

9
 10. 10. Greenstone Communities

It is not possible to articulate the exact user of Greenstone software, because of its free and openness. Out of them, some selective users are:

Documentation Research and Training Centre, Indian Statistical Institute available at:

Indian Institute of Science available at:

Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai available at:

V V Giri National Labour Institute & Association of Indian Labour Historians available at: Delhi

Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode available at: http://

10
 11. 11. Training & Development (T.D.)

Training is must for wide spread adoption of any Open Source Software movement. Greenstone community has provided very well-built support over T.D.

National / International off-line training courses have been provided by UNESCO & Waikato University.

Online support:

http://

11
