  • 2. Thought beats
Firstly you must analyse the lyrics and music. You also need to interpret the music using the verses and chorus of the song.
Secondly you need to analyse the tone and voice of the song.
Thirdly you need to see if the artist is telling a story in the lyrics of the song. The music video can help tell this story to the audience.
  • 3. Narrative and performance
The music only gives us limited knowledge about the narrative. So the performance by the artist should reinforce the narrative in the music to give the audience a better understanding of the narrative.
The narrative also gives the music video coherent repeatability. As the performance and music used together enhance the narrative making it easier for the audience to repeatedly watch these videos.
  • 4. Relationships between lyrics and visuals
The music video uses visuals to illustrate the meaning and narrative of the lyrics.
Meaning is repeated and constantly shown in the music video. This drums the meaning in to the audiences mind.
The visuals in the music video ignore the lyrical content of the music

The pace of the editing is usually determined by the pace of the song.
Cuts between shots normally follow the rhythm of the song.
  • 6. Intertextual references
Sometimes music videos will refer to other media texts within the music video.
  • 7. Multiple close ups of artist
Multiple close ups of the artist are used. This is to create a sense of familiarity between the artist and the audience. This makes the audience feel closer to the artist.
  • 8. How can I use this information to help me create my music video?
This information shows me that my music video should contain frequent close ups of the artist and Intertextual references.
It should also use visuals to illustrate or amplify meaning.
The pace of my edit should follow the pace of the music.
I need to use performance to make the narrative clear for the audience.
Cuts should follow the rhythm of the music.
