Role of Load Balancers in Widespread Corporate Networks

Today's business environment is one that finds most of the enterprises getting into the globalization
fold. In their attempt to stand fast against the fiercely competitive business world, enterprises move
towards newer markets, regions and nations with their products, manufacturing units and distribution
zones. Nevertheless to keep all the different units of the same enterprises in different time zones
working together these enterprises communicate through their wide corporate networks.

However, to meet the changing business environment, advent of virtualization, public and private
clouds and the explosion in mobile traffic, enterprises make use of new applications, technological
developments and BYOD solutions for business continuity. This allows the vast expanse of customers,
vendors, partners and employees to access the corporate network anytime irrespective of the
location and device which tends to overload the network servers. To combat issues of overload, the
networking professionals provide these global enterprises load balancers which will help them
distribute the workload of processing various application, data and service request from across the
network.

Load balancers are dedicated IT infrastructure which includes software, hardware, multilayer switch
or DNS servers that forms the critical components of the network. Load balancing as defined by
Wikipedia “is a computer networking methodology to distribute workload across multiple computers
or a computer cluster, network links, central processing units, disk drives, or other resources, to
achieve optimal resource utilization, maximize throughput, minimize response time, and avoid
overload.”

However, with present day enterprises making it easy for the workforce by allowing access to the
corporate servers under their 'Bring Your Own Device', enterprises also need to consider optimizing
the load balancer functioning. Establishing the application session type, maintaining user session
information, preparing for emergencies, determining and measuring network activity and using access
lists to restrict any unnecessary traffic which will prevent overloading the servers. Such load balancing
techniques will help enterprises to optimize the system performance.

Further, the intelligent analysis of the wide are connections by the load balancers will also facilitate to
allocate bandwidth for business critical applications and pave way for availability and scalability of
higher application across the various stakeholders accessing the network. As enterprises move
towards new standards in their IT infrastructure, load balancers from the leading service providers
supports and manages the traffic and application acceleration to ensure availability and security of
these applications and cloud services. Further, by cost-effectively driving the performance of server
load balancing these load balancers not only reduces the complexity of the data centers but also
increases the total value of ownership and speedy return on investments.
