  1. 1. Families are Funny Introduction: As you complete this activity, you will learn how to draw a comic strip. Materials: You’ll need examples of comic strips or comic books (especially those about families), colored pencils and markers or crayons, a pen or pencil, and a piece of white paper 12 inches wide and 4 inches tall. Directions: Share some examples of your favorite comic books or newspaper comic strips. Talk about what you like about them. Notice that each comic book or strip tells a story in a series of boxes or panels. Then, follow the steps below to draw a comic strip that tells a funny story about your family. Each of you should make your own comic strip. Plan the comic strip. What story will you tell? Use a ruler to divide your white paper into three panels; each panel should be 4 inches wide. Draw the comic strip in pencil. Be sure to leave empty at least the top 1/3 of the strip for your lettering. Color in your pictures and add the lettering. Talk About It: Share your family comic strips with each other. Can you recognize the people in your family from their pictures, words, or actions? Learn More: Visit Draw and Color with Uncle Fred at http://www.unclefred.com to learn more about how to draw comics and cartoons.
