  3. 3. <ul><li>Notre Dame de Paris , known simply as Notre Dame in English, is a Gothic cathedral on the eastern half of the Île de la Cité in Paris, France. </li></ul><ul><li>Notre Dame de Paris was one of the first Gothic cathedrals, and its construction spanned the Gothic period. Its sculptures and stained glass show the heavy influence of naturalism. </li></ul>
  4. 4. History <ul><li>Maurice de Sully, bishop of Paris, decided to build a new cathedral for the expanding population, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Although construction started in 1163, it was not completed until roughly 180 years later in about 1345. </li></ul><ul><li>During the Commune of 1871, the Cathedral was nearly burned by the Communards . </li></ul><ul><li>Starting in 1991, a 10 year program of general maintenance and restoration was initiated. While work continues, sections of the structure are likely to be shrouded by scaffolds. </li></ul>

  6. 6. <ul><li>The Kaaba is the holiest place in Islam. The qibla, is the direction from their location on Earth towards the Kaaba. </li></ul><ul><li>A significant feature of the Kaaba is the Black Stone,. It is about 30 cm (12 inches) in diameter, and is surrounded by a silver frame. </li></ul>

History <ul><li>As little is known of the pre-Islamic history of the Kaaba, there are various opinions regarding its formation and significance. </li></ul><ul><li>Writing in the Encyclopedia of Islam, Wensinck identifies Mecca with a place called Macoraba mentioned by Ptolemy. His text is believed to date from the second century AD, and described it as a foundation in southern Arabia, built around a sanctuary. </li></ul>

  9. 9. <ul><li>The Mahabodhi Temple is a Buddhist temple in Bodh Gaya, the location where Siddhartha Gautama, attained enlightenment. </li></ul><ul><li>Bodh Gaya is located about 96 km from Patna, Bihar state, India. Next to the temple, to its western side, is the holy Bodhi tree. </li></ul>

History <ul><li>Traditional accounts say that, around 530 BC, Gautama Buddha, wandering as a monk, reached the sylvan banks of Falgu River, near the city of Gaya, India. </li></ul><ul><li>There he sat in meditation under a peepul tree (Sacred Fig), which later became known as the Bodhi tree. </li></ul>
