Abstaining from food and drink as well as gossip, lying, anger, etc. The focus is on spirituality and being the best person you can be. Eid ul Fitr is celebrated at the end of the month to mark the end of fasting.

For example: picking the pepperoni off pizza isn’t going to work. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Muslims follow certain standards called Halal (permissible) to slaughter meat. </li></ul><ul><li>Some Muslims won’t eat any meat that isn’t certified Halal and some will, as long as it’s not pork. </li></ul>

  20. 20. www.cairhouston.org Slide Dressing Modestly: Clothing and Dress <ul><li>In public, Muslim women wear loose-fitting, non-revealing clothing, known as Hijab or Khimar </li></ul><ul><li>This attire may vary in style and includes a head covering </li></ul><ul><li>Some believe they do not need to cover their hair in order to maintain modest dress </li></ul>
  21. 21. www.cairhouston.org Slide <ul><li>Muslim men are also required to dress modestly </li></ul><ul><li>You might see some Muslim boys wearing a small, sometimes flat cap on their heads. This is called a Kufi and although it isn’t required, some guys like to wear it all the time as a symbol of their religion. </li></ul><ul><li>If you see someone wearing a turban it doesn’t necessarily mean they are a Muslim. In fact chances are they’re not. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Turbans are a symbol of a religion called Sikhism, which has nothing to do with Islam. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Cultural symbols for some countries in the Middle East so some men may wear one but it looks very different from a Sikh turban. </li></ul></ul>
  22. 22. www.cairhouston.org Slide Gender Relations <ul><li>Muslims are not allowed to date so excessive male and female interaction is generally limited. </li></ul><ul><li>In this regard, some Muslims may not attend school dances or socials because some parents may not approve of the environment (too much boy/girl interaction) </li></ul>
