  • 1. Interactive textiles Good morning ! A cooperation between Diffus, the Danish School of Design and University of Copenhagen
  • 2. Interactive textiles Workshop at the Danish School of Design May 2th to may 24th A cooperation between Diffus, the Danish School of Design and University of Copenhagen
  • 3. Interactive textiles Teachers; Michel Guglielmi, Danish school of Design, Diffus Hanne Louise Johannesen, Copenhagen University - visual culture, Diffus Guest teachers: Flemming Steffensen, Techno Wizard, Diffus Gökhan Mura , PHD student, working with smart textils, Istanbul Technical University Bitten Hegelund, Textil printing, Danish school of Design A cooperation between Diffus, the Danish School of Design and University of Copenhagen
  • 4. Interactive textiles A collective challenge for product and visual communication designer bridging arbitrary fields of activities material / immaterial bits / atoms digital / analog product / visual communication teory / practice craft / computer technology research / pedagogy . A cooperation between Diffus, the Danish School of Design and University of Copenhagen
  • 5. Interactive textiles Subject of the workshop: The main issue of the workshop is to look at, experience with and learn from situations of communication through what we wear and bring that to a higher or different level through the combination of computer technology and the materiality of fabric. The achievement is to develop systems of what we could call quot;collaborative or communicating clothingquot; which will bring forth new sophisticated platforms of expression in terms of fashion, performance art, dance theatre or likewise. The workshop will elaborate on the goals, boundaries and consequences of such new potential for the individual expression. A cooperation between Diffus, the Danish School of Design and University of Copenhagen
  • 6. Interactive textiles Goals: To understand the potential of interactive technology To define a new language for wearable expression To explore new paradigms of expressing identities trough smart textiles. To explore possibilities of applications in related fields like space design, scnenography, choregraphy, furniture design. To explore new computer mediated interaction scenarios To combine traditional textile practices with computational design To create sensual, tactil artifacts combined with computer mediated abilities. A cooperation between Diffus, the Danish School of Design and University of Copenhagen
  • 7. Interactive textiles Method: 1) Invevestigation of three possible technologies - Luminescent wires, films and strips - Thermochromic ink - SPD emulsion ( in a later stage) A cooperation between Diffus, the Danish School of Design and University of Copenhagen

  • 12. Interactive textiles Method: 3) Conception of the interactive garments: Hands on ! A cooperation between Diffus, the Danish School of Design and University of Copenhagen SPD (Suspended particles device) emulsion coating
  • 13. Interactive textiles Method: 4) Defining the ”story” as well as the rules and nature of the realtime based interaction mediated by the garment Input ? pollution, hearthbeats, sound level, proximity... Output ? blinking, fading... Rules ? When, where, why... A cooperation between Diffus, the Danish School of Design and University of Copenhagen SPD (Suspended particles device) emulsion coating
  • 14. Interactive textiles click on picture Method: 5) Experimenting and playing with the technology Here, an early experimentation shows how a 50mm constant wire is heated up with 9 watt (9 volt, around 1 amp). It produces a 100% change of color after 1 second, the time for the heat to migrate into the textil. A cooperation between Diffus, the Danish School of Design and University of Copenhagen SPD (Suspended particles device) emulsion coating
  • 15. Interactive textiles Method: 6) Synergy between teaching / workshops and research into technology and unexpected applications A cooperation between Diffus, the Danish School of Design and University of Copenhagen SPD (Suspended particles device) emulsion coating
  • 16. Interactive textiles Method: 6) Collaboration in artistic fields ... making the limits between art and design DIFFUS. • 17. Interactive textiles A Visit: the Swedish School of Textiles: At the Swedish School of Textiles the creativity of art is combined with the ingenuity of technology. This combination is the common thread for textile research conducted in a variety of themes within four main research areas: • Design • Technology • Management • Craft See: www.hb.se/ths/research/ A cooperation between Diffus, the Danish School of Design and University of Copenhagen
