  4. 4. Graffiti <ul><li>Graffiti is the writing and/or drawing of words and images on surfaces. </li></ul><ul><li>Graffiti gained attention in New York City in 1971. </li></ul><ul><li>Debate: Is graffiti art or vandalism? </li></ul>

Breakdancing <ul><li>Inspired by James Brown’s dance – the Good Foot, 1969. </li></ul><ul><li>The first breakdance crew – Zulu Nation – was formed by Afrika Bambaataa in 1969. </li></ul><ul><li>“ Uprock” is a dance battle between breakdance crews. </li></ul><ul><li>Blends four types of dance: </li></ul><ul><li>breaking </li></ul><ul><li>dancing </li></ul><ul><li>locking </li></ul><ul><li>popping </li></ul><ul><li>Question: Can you think of other types of dance battles? </li></ul>

DJ <ul><li>DJs use record turntables to “manipulate pre-recorded sounds” to create new sound works. </li></ul><ul><li>3 important elements: </li></ul><ul><li>Breakbeats – Kool DJ </li></ul><ul><li>Herc </li></ul><ul><li>Scratching – Grand </li></ul><ul><li>Wizard Thodore </li></ul><ul><li>Beat Juggling </li></ul>

Rapping <ul><li>The “rhythmic delivery of rhymes…delivered over a beat or without accompaniment.” </li></ul><ul><li>Started as shout-outs to friends by DJs. </li></ul><ul><li>Rappers use lyrics to explore street/ghetto life. </li></ul><ul><li>Regionalism and rap: </li></ul><ul><li>East Coast </li></ul><ul><li>West Coast </li></ul><ul><li>Dirty South </li></ul>
