CITY MEDIA is an independent foundation based in Lausanne (Switzerland). Its aim is to facilitate information access on towns, cities and regions of the world. It promotes and offers local representatives tools for expanding their official communication and getting involved in global development by simplifying information access and knowledge sharing. Their latest project is called [City].vi, a network of 68,000 video sites, each specific to a city.

About CityMedia Foundation • An independent foundation based in Lausanne (Switzerland) • Started in 2007 following the Rome 2006 “World Congress on Communication for Development” • 65 members in 15 countries contributing to product and services development and promotion • Aim: to facilitate access to information on the towns, cities and regions of the world helping in in global development by simplifying communication, access to information and knowledge sharing ,stimulating curiosity, learning and respect, synonymous for evolution • Also offers and promotes tools to city and region representatives to spread official communication and collaborate on a wider level for development

About City Media members • 65 members from 15 countries who are contributing to these systems’ development and promotion • Mainly from fields of communications, marketing, management and technology analysis • Working continuously in close contact to improve the available tools and create new tools for local information

The Concept • A network of 68,000 city specific video sites promoting direct local information delivery through video • Launched on 10th Oct 2010 by CITY MEDIA foundation • Currently covering city tour, news, events and professional videos on the cities and regions of the world • A simple access model: “city name” followed by “.vi”. For eg. Dubai.vi, Seoul.vi, Berlin.vi . Neat, isn’t it? • Visit the central network page City.vi to look for new cities • You are among the first to know about the network. So spread the word around to friends , family and colleagues

Emergence of Video on Internet • Video is the fastest growing online segment apart from social networking • Video sharing among the most popular application on social networking sites • Video sharing sites like Youtube among the most popular on the net • Today’s Youth see video as a fundamental form of expression • In 2012, Internet video traffic alone will be 400 times the traffic carried by the U.S. Internet backbone in 2000 • Internet video has grown from 12 % of the global consumer Internet traffic in 2006 to 34 % in 2009 according to Cisco Visual Networking Index. It is expected to rise to 40% by end of 2010 • Internet Video is largest traffic type even if we exclude peer to peer video sharing • Summing up Video has already become preferred information medium
  • 6. City.Vi Flagship tool of the new era of the “Citizen’s Internet” City.vi sites are new local public forums where content is created by “local actors” and the inhabitants

City.vi features • City.vi provides local information in the most preferred online medium Video • Answers the need for specific and relevant local information • Cities and regions covered are among the world’s most significant • Number of cities and regions covered will increase as per need • Unique and innovative graphical site design • Simplifies information access by providing local information on the specific city.vi page instead of cumbersome search engine > page select > page view route • City.vi pages to be managed by local authorities / representatives / officials . In their absence, sites will be managed by relevant local bloggers • Complementary to cities’ official sites perfectly providing a complete video forum • Open to all web's content by allowing video embedding.

The site administrators are informed by email of the upload 3. Upon approval the videos appear on the site • Simple operation to optimize local on-line communication by ensuring maximum participation • Cities with most quality videos to be promoted to city.vi network benefiting from high international coverage • Collaborative nature where citizens and users can share videos on local culture, future events or current affairs embodying “Citizens’ Information Pooling” • Easy and wide spread user generation of videos due to increased use of digital cameras, camcorders and mobile phones for video recording

Cultural and Social Contribution • Possible to highlight local cultural and social facets reaffirming its image and identity • Culture is the among the largest attraction of a city / region, closely tied to economic activity, culture and can also serve as a revenue source • For Locals – Information on city.vi can stimulate new partnerships between cultural institutions, artists and even business people – Promotes meeting of people and social cohesion leading to development – The realism of video enables a sense of identity and belonging encouraging respect for and strengthening cultural diversity – Leads to more openness towards the different cultures in a town, city or region creating stronger social connectivity • For visitors – travel videos to help discover the city – culture videos to gain further insight into the city – the news and events videos help further to discover local life and its main characters, promoting meetings and exchanges

Overall Benefits • Promoting the cultural and tourism heritage, encouraging its development and conservation • Furnishing useful information to visitors and advising them about the most significant sites of interest • Presenting cultural activities and their schedules, e.g. theatrical and musical productions • Raising local citizen awareness about particular causes or projects and garnering support • Facilitating dissemination of important information to local citizens like programs and policy actions by authorities • Local businesses can advertise their products and services • As part of the 68,000 site strong city.vi network each site to benefit from higher visits than stand alone sites

About Cities • Each city embodies unique historical, cultural and environmental wealth • Exploration of a city leads to more awareness and contributes to social, intellectual and spiritual development • Cities are symbols of the human connection and a testimony to part of his identity – Today cities are places for Mixing and intermingling of cultures – Hub for innovation and exchange • Also centers for modern society evils like exclusion, violence, unemployment, poverty, environmental problems etc... • Cause for negatives: ignorance and lack of information about our surroundings • City Media members using their awareness and vision selecting and developing and promoting the best new technologies for defining requirements and how the local information of tomorrow will be used

Local Government • Local government is again becoming more important for social and cultural development requiring tools for the same • Objectives for local authorities – Make access to official information as simple as possible. – Make this information qualitative. – Unite local citizens by involving them in the reviews and initiatives taken by the municipal team – Open the city to the world to enrich it with new ideas and experiences

It is also possible to browse through the proposal announcements by geographical selection looking for ideas, to make suggestions, contact a city or particular institution. if it is not registered CityMedia foundation will set up contact with our network of members.
