Sandy Hicklen became ill with a rare cancer in 2005 and ultimately died three years later in July 2008. Hers was a difficult battle that required many surgeries and hospitalizations, chemoradiation treatments, home care services, equipment, drugs and medical supplies, and finally, Hospice. The experience illuminated several issues:1. The people throughout the healthcare system are skilled, committed professionals who care about their patients2. They are burdened by a system that forces people to spend considerable time in unproductive efforts and NOT caring for patientsCare from hospital to home is inconsistent, not proactiveStandards of care for common conditions exist, but are not well utilized or monitoredServices and resources that have to come together in the home are not well planned, scheduled, or utilizedConclusion: We have seen this in other markets. We can solve it in healthcare.Lessons from other markets have taught us that these disparate services and resources can be organized into a delivery model that can be made more efficient immediately, and can be continually measured and improved. Healthcare “best practices” can be captured and applied more consistently. It is not too difficult to do. Businesses such as Boeing and GE have leveraged process and quality models across very complex supply webs. Companies like UPS and FEDEX have brought scheduling and planning to incredible heights. Internet, SaaS, and mobile phone technologies enable these models to be deployed widely and affordably.
